The CPA-Zicklin Model Code of Conduct for Corporate Political Spending was developed to help companies manage the risks associated with election-related spending. It does that by giving them a framework for approaching and governing their spending. The purpose of the Guide is to help companies understand the Model Code's provisions, make them a key part of how they engage in and manage election-related spending, and understand the ways in which they can commit publicly to these goals. It can be quite beneficial for firms to network with influential politicians. But what happens if these politicians are involved in shady business dealings, use taxpayer funds to finance lavish offices or vacations, are subject to sexual harassment lawsuits, or express homophobic or xenophobic views? To examine this question, Jacco Wielhouwer and I hand-collected a sample of 218 scandals involving members of the U.S. Congress and identified firms that contributed to the scandal politicians’ political action committees. We find that following corruption scandals, connected firms lose about 0.9% in share price, experience negative newspaper coverage, are more likely to receive shareholder proposals on political spending, and reduce their contributions to other (non-scandal) politicians. Overall, our results suggest that connected firms experience losses in reputation that likely stem from concerns about the firms’ financial integrity. I am excited to see this final chapter of my dissertation published (open access) at the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting (https://lnkd.in/epK2WxMH). The complete set of scandals, including event dates, media sources, descriptions, and characteristics of scandal politicians, is available at https://lnkd.in/eP2b5XW7.
