𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 | 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 - 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 After having lunch with an AmLaw 20 partner this week, it is clear there is a sense of optimism in the field of laterally hiring Associates across a range of class years with how the market is shifting. Interestingly, this partner touched on personality and a collegiate spirit being the key factor they look for in the hiring process. The takeaway for Associates - be yourself when interviewing! We are recruiting across a broad range of mandates currently, however as of this week please reach out if the below is of interest: Restructuring | Associate | Class of 2019-2022 | AmLaw 20 Firm | New York Private Equity | Associate | Class of 2022+ | AmLaw 20 Firm | New York Fund Finance | Associate | Class of 2017-2021 | AmLaw 30 Firm | New York Real Estate | Associate| Class of 2020-2022 | AmLaw 50 Firm | New York As the back end of the year is rapidly approaching, reach out to discuss lateral hiring opportunities for this year or looking into 2025. 📧 gabriella.ogrady@sonderconsultants.com

Here’s what we’re seeing on the ground in the Toronto legal market this month: • Litigation remains active, dominating all other practices in terms of lateral moves. Litigators should be thinking critically about where you'd like to take your career and capitalize on this market if that means changing firms. • Labour and employment continues to be a close second in terms of the number of lateral moves with several specialized firms adding top talent. • Corporate hasn’t gained momentum. While we’ve seen a handful of lateral moves in capital markets and financial services, corporate associates who are looking to move should expect it to take some time - especially heading into the summer months. • Project finance lawyers are seeing cross-border and international opportunities open up, particularly in NYC and LA. #lawjobs #legalprofession

As we head into the end of summer, here's what we're seeing in Toronto's legal market: • Litigation opportunities continue to outpace corporate 2:1. Even in the summer months, we’re still seeing lots of opportunities for litigation associates (all levels) who are considering options. While firms might not be advertising, they are hiring top litigation talent. • Banking & finance is seeing an uptick in opportunities, especially for mid-level associates (2-4 years) looking to join top national firms. Reach out if you'd like to discuss options • Insolvency & restructuring associates remain in demand. Remember, this is a counter-cyclical practice. At the risk of sounding alarmist, this market won't last forever, so if it's important to consider options while the market is in your favour. • While hiring across corporate groups remains slow, firms are selectively considering top talent, which is a shift from Q1 and Q2 when firms weren't entertaining candidates in these practice areas. If you have questions about how the current market impacts your career strategy or lateral options, feel free to email me for a confidential conversation (beth@smithlegalsearch.com).

Tales from a legal Recruiter - "From Real Estate to Corporate M&A: How Leveraging Relationships and Taking Risks Led to a Career Win" Making a career move is never easy—especially when it means stepping out of your comfort zone. It’s like Stephen Curry deciding to take that half-court shot—you’re stepping into new territory, and you don’t always know if it’s going to land. I worked almost 8 years ago with an attorney who was ready to transition from real estate to Corporate M&A, but there were a few challenges: They might have to take a pay cut . The firm they wanted to join—a top Silicon Valley player—already had plenty of associates at their class year. They were hesitant. So, how did we make it happen? As I was talking to one of my clients, I realized the associate had a great relationship with a general counsel I knew they’d love to do business with. Kind of like Stephen Curry having that killer three-point shot, but then passing it to Kevin Durant for the perfect assist. We leveraged that connection to secure business for the firm while helping the associate make the transition. It was a win-win. The associate not only moved into Corporate M&A, but they were also working on big deals that were going to push their career to the next level—talk about going from the bench to the starting five. And because I wanted to make sure they were stepping into that new role with full confidence, I connected them with my custom tailor for a perfect fit for their first day—on me, of course. Fast forward: This associate has been killing it ever since. Their career is on fire—like Curry draining 3-pointers from anywhere on the court. The lesson? When making a career move, don’t just look at the obvious stats. Think about the relationships and opportunities that will help you hit your career-winning shots. Whether you’re pivoting into a new practice or going for a whole new play, leverage those connections that’ll set you up for long-term success.
