Questioning the obvious// Today, as I finished one more corporate mentoring session, this was the number one To-do on on her action plan: “To train more asking questions and to stimulate my curiosity about the world” With time I’ve been realising that this is my main action with my workshops, my classes, my individual mentoring sessions: —> to invite people to question the obvious! And we do this in several different ways: - Asking more questions - Feeling curiosity for diversity - Watching outside - Exploring “what if’s?…” Every time I hear that this was the outcome of a session o feel I am contribute to change the world a little bit. Creating consciousness, questioning and provoking other ways of seeing the same (hopefully in a more constructive, optimistic way). The power of questioning!

Afterall, the more we #share, the more we #grow 🌱, #GrowAtYara For Yara colleagues: https://lnkd.in/dbbcwVZS For others, here is an excerpt below :-) ------------------------------------ Yara Learning Moments: Marie Lacombe, nurturing resilience through perseverance Learning through collaborating, pushing past initial failures key to Patent Manager's growth Patent Manager and attorney Marie Lacombe reflected on her continuous learning and growth at Yara as she prepares to take on an external role after 11 years. In a position often bridging legal expertise with technical understanding from Yara's top engineers, it's critical to learn both in order to provide the most informed advice and contribute to her team, Marie said. “If you want to collaborate,” she said simply, “then you have to learn.” One of her most significant periods of learning came while she devoted her nights and weekends to patent attorney exam prep, bolstering her resilience with every go. After on-the-job training is an exam, she explained. And as one might assume, passing these exams is a game of persistence overcoming resistance. “It's not easy,” she said. “It's unlikely that you can succeed at first, so you definitely have to be very resilient. You need to keep on learning until you pass, and that's what happened with me," she said, citing the Learn & Grow leadership behavior as a driver for her own behaviors in this and other professional situations. It took Marie three tries to pass the four exams. Many would have given up. She did the opposite: Persisting and trying several different methodologies to complete the exam on time and accurately. "Curiosity comes along with learning," she continued. “If you're afraid to learn, you are not going to understand it. I don't think you can be. You just have to dive in and swim, and then it becomes exciting,” she said. With the exams behind her, Marie enjoys learning through lecturers and has found “lots of relevant courses on Degreed,” spanning everything from intellectual property to resilience to emotional intelligence. But it's often the small moments, stopping and talking with her colleagues right while she works that provide the best resources. “Learning actually makes me very efficient,” she said. Even better, it's fun. “Learning is what makes the daily job very exciting,” she said.

A photo from this past weekend’s induction ceremony for Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz coaches Hue Menzies and Lorne Donaldson. Their careers reminded me that it is not where we start from, it is where we are heading and how we eventually finish. There are dispensations in time for a career to unfold and take shape to have the impact that it was predestined to achieve. My track and field coach and mentor, William P. Moultrie (It’s Easy Son) described the legs of a 4x4 relay as the “lead off leg”, the “quick leg”, the “power leg,” and finally the “clean up leg or anchor leg.” A simple analogy about growth and development in one’s career. The lead off leg gets us in the race. It positions us to move with everyone and compete for what we want in life. We stay in our lanes the whole way around trying to size up the opposition and stay in the hunt (primary school, middle school, high school, college, and all form of formal and informal education are key with this leg). Then we move to the quick leg. This leg is supposed to set us up for life. We are young and strong and full of speed (early adulthood and career/business goals). We are supposed to quickly move into position and ease into our flow and rhythm. It is either out front, or closely drafting off the leaders. An analogy is moving swiftly but measured (learning from mentors and growing our own base of knowledge). We then have the power leg where it acts as a safety valve if we messed up the quick leg and fell out of position. We might find ourselves losing or not achieving what we set out to do. We were not properly focused on the quick leg and paid a price. This leg has to get us back into position. It might mean changing careers. It might mean ending some relationships that mean us no good. The power leg gets us back in good shape and back on track. We then have the clean up or anchor leg that simply wins the race. From whatever position we find ourselves in the race, this leg takes us through to victory. Our anchor leg is experienced and watched all the happenings on the three previous legs. The runner on this leg knows what has to be done to close this thing out. They are sold out on the idea of fulfilling the team’s potential by leaving it all on the track. It is merely coincidence that there are four people in this photo. However, the journeys of both Hue Menzies and Lorne Donaldson personifies these four legs of a relay based on their lived experiences. Congrats to these two men for showing the world that dreams and perseverance will reap rewards if we pay attention to the four legs.

Learning at work week aims to encourage building learning cultures at work. How we do this is an interesting question as many of us did not experience a good culture of learning even as children at school. We know that children learn through play. We know they are naturally curious and creative. We know that many people’s experience of education did not allow them to embrace playfulness, curiosity or creativity. Ken Robinson once said that “We don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out of it.” This is a sad reality for many of us and as a result we forget that we are imaginative, resourceful, innovative beings. So how do we change this narrative and create a work culture that allows us to embrace our capacity for childlike learning? (This is perhaps, too complex a question for one LinkedIn post.)
