We're thrilled to congratulate the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) on the creation of the Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI).
As a non-profit, multi-stakeholder governed initiative, its aim is to provide communities, investors, the mining industry and other interested stakeholders with confidence that effective measures are being put in place to prevent future tailings failures. The institute will oversee a process for an assessment of the level of conformance for a specific tailings facility against all 77 Requirements of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
As the Brazil Independent Technical, Environmental and Social Auditors for the most extensive and established Independent Audit Program of tailing storage facilities (TSF) globally, we are committed to providing independent conformance assessments to better secure the safety of mines and livability of the surrounding communities.

The Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) launched today! The GTMI is an independent organisation, dedicated to improving the safety of mine tailings facilities worldwide. Our goal? To achieve zero harm to people and the environment, with zero tolerance for human fatality.
The role of the GTMI is to ensure tailings facilities are responsibly managed across all phases of their lifecycle, by driving the implementation of, and assessing conformance with, the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.
We have been founded by ICMM, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). Sustained engagement between the three founding partners, supported by guidance from an international advisory panel representing multiple stakeholders, has brought us to this point.
As a non-profit, multi-stakeholder governed institute, we aim to provide communities, investors, the mining industry and other interested parties, with confidence that effective measures are being put in place to prevent future tailings failures.
The GTMI looks forward to enhancing the safety of mine tailings facilities worldwide, and helping to protect people and the environment.

The Council on Ethics of the Swedish National Pension Funds welcomes the launch of the Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI). The Institute is tasked with implementing the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), which inception the Council on Ethics has contributed to.
The Council on Ethics continues to focus on the mining industry through the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, where we are part of the steering committee as well as co-chair of a working group. More to come during 2025.

Today the Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) is launched. As the honorary Global Ambassador for the GTMI it is obviously a great day, and I am very proud and happy to finally see this happen.
When Adam Matthews and I setup the Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative, post the tragic Brumadhino disaster in Brazil, we had no idea we would be working intensively for six years to address this issue properly.
But here we are, The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management is being implemented all over the world and now with the GTMI we have laid the foundation for independent verification of that implementation. I am sure that Brumadhino would not have happened if these processes would have been available and implemented by Vale. I am quite sure that any mining company that goes through this processes a safer company for doing so and significantly reduced the risk of future disasters.
Therefore, kudos to the members of ICMM who are working through this as we speak and now is preparing for the independent verification of that work. It is a lot of work even for the best prepared companies. The wider mining community is picking up and addressing this, but it will take time and resources (people) are scarce.
Responsible mining is the foundation of the transition away from fossil fuels. As the landmark report of the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 has shown the electrification of almost everything and addressing energy poverty in many parts of the world will depend on more mines being started.
The triumvirate of UN Environment Programme, Principles for Responsible Investment and ICMM is proving to be a strong platform for a global response to a a difficult challenge, setting a much needed level playing field.
The mining industry is quickly moving in that way with its work on consolidated standards trying to simplify the plethora of voluntary standards out there. This is good thing because the current backlash against ESG, sustainability thrives on opaque complexity. I believe that we should strive to replicate these processes wherever possible – globalize and simplify – setting a global level playing field.
Excellent work done by Adam Matthews, Stephen Barrie, Elisa Tonda, Charlotte Ndakorerwa, UN Environment Programme, David Cooling, the fantastic GTMI multistakeholder advisory panel, Rohitesh Dhawan, Aidan Davy, ICMM, support by David Atkin, Principles for Responsible Investment Finally, thank you Angelica Amanda Andrade for your support and patience - this would not have happened without you.
