Strolling through Midtown Manhattan? Running to catch your LIRR train at Grand Central Station? Discover the Engineering Marvel Behind Pershing Square West Plaza! When you're next walking by Grand Central Station, take a moment to appreciate the engineering brilliance behind the Pershing Square West Plaza and Streetscape. After years of planning and perseverance, the dream of creating an inviting pedestrian plaza finally came to life in 2019, thanks to the NYC Plaza Program and the NYC Department of Design and Construction. #ZOFSInAction was entrusted with the monumental task of beautifying the area and overhauling its infrastructure; providing Resident Engineering Inspection Services. Right across the street from one of NYC's busiest hubs, this project was more than just a facelift—it was a deep dive into the heart of the city's infrastructure. We replaced and relocated underground utilities, including a staggering 1420 linear feet of 36-inch diameter steel trunk water mains and 1880 linear feet of distribution water mains. All this, right beside and underneath the historic Park Avenue Viaduct. We didn't stop at the utilities. The area was transformed into a vibrant pedestrian plaza, integrating street features and green infrastructure like rain gardens. The addition of electrical fixtures further enhanced the public space, making it a welcoming spot for both New Yorkers and visitors. One of the most challenging aspects was developing the trunk main while accounting for the viaduct, underground subway structures, and other interferences. This required meticulous planning and innovative solutions, such as revising the originally designed 48-inch trunk main to navigate low clearances crossing existing subway structures. A special thanks to the NYC Department of Design and Construction for allowing us to support our city once again. 🏙️ 𝗕𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌟 The historic South Station, a Boston landmark since 1899, is being reimagined with the $1.5 billion South Station Tower project—a 51-story skyscraper that will feature 700,000 square feet of office space and 166 residential units. This transformative development, recognised by CNN as one of the 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, is setting new benchmarks for innovation and design. CCL is proud to be part of this iconic project, thanks to our client 𝗦&𝗙 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲, delivering advanced 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 not only for the U-shaped concrete tunnel within the tower’s structural steel truss frame but also for the entire building structure. The tunnel presented a unique challenge: it needed to be self-supporting during construction without additional shoring, despite its complex design and heavy reinforcement. Leveraging our unbonded monostrand system, CCL provided a solution that met these demanding requirements while maintaining structural efficiency. By integrating our expertise in post-tensioning technology throughout the building, we’ve played a vital role in ensuring the structural integrity and sustainability of this extraordinary development. 👷 Comfab Projects ~ Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport The Western Sydney International Airport is designed to create a seamless and engaging user experience through inspired architecture, efficient functionality, and thoughtful integration with its regional context. The design reflects the natural beauty of the Western Sydney region, incorporating local materials, natural light, and aesthetic elements inspired by the Cumberland Plain bush flora and neighbouring Blue Mountains. Sustainable principles are embedded throughout, with features like extensive daylight use, natural ventilation, water recycling, and modular, energy-efficient construction. The terminal roof, inspired by eucalyptus trees and airplane wings, enhances intuitive navigation and creates a sophisticated interplay of form and function. Fixed link bridges provide clear views of aircraft and apron areas, with perforated metal screening fins inspired by jet engine turbines allowing filtered light and reduced glare.
