Intern: Nathan from #Vietnam Position: Field Technician; Haley and Aldrich - #CivilEngineering Q: What is one important skill you learned during your internship that you wouldn't have been able to learn in a classroom? A: One important skill that I learned during my internship is to always be ready for anything. Asking for more job exposure, so that I can learn more about a specific path in my major. Q: Did the internship prepare you for a career in your field? A: I think the internship has equipped me well; not only applied knowledge from school but also learned how can contribute to communities through my career. What would it be if you could choose your dream job? Why? A: If I could choose a dream job, I will have my own construction company specializing in prefabricated homes. I want to provide affordable housing for communities that are less fortunate. Q: What is the best tip you can offer other international students trying to secure an internship? A: That being said, the best tipI can offer you, who are securing your internship is that. “Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.”— Tim Ferriss. That being said, so keep believing in yourself, keep looking and you will find what is meant for you.

The debate is over! Interns who have great hands-on experiences like to tell everyone about it. In this video, Nolan, a WisDOT Civil Engineer and former intern, talks at a roundabout project on the State Highway 60 Roadway at Eagle Drive in Jackson, Wisconsin. It is just another day in the life of thousands of construction workers across the U.S. As a construction intern Nolan shared the value of watching something get built while being outside rather than sitting in the office all day. I love this quote: “Working this summer felt less of like a business and more of like a learning community. Everyone was willing to help me. Everyone was willing to teach me. I really enjoyed that and I felt like it would be a great way to spend the rest of my career.” He got to see different job sites and experience different things. He saw that as very valuable in assessing what he wanted to do with his future and chose WisDOT. Principles were most likely at the heart of the way the internship was constructed. So, add that to your punch list. I acknowledge WisDOT for designing a wonderful hands-on internship program and engineering this 2-minute video. They have cemented a positive impression on me and everyone who surveys their work. No need to go in circles in a roundabout. The debate is over. Hands-on experiences are valued by interns. P.S. How should you set up your internship? 1) AUTHENTICITY Far too often I see construction companies providing internship programs that do not align with their day to day operations in an effort to attract the best talent and quantity of interns. If you are creating a program that does not mirror what your full-time employees experience you could be creating retention challenges (for both the interns & the full-time folks) as well as creating bad habits or "hollow spots" long-term. Ground your recruiting & development programs in reality. Don't try and make your internship program rewarding and attractive - make your entire company culture rewarding and attractive and then have your internship program mirror your operational expectations. You may end up with less interns but the ones that do join you will stay & be trained properly according to your culture & expectations.
