Lots of talk around Grenfell this last week alongside the results of industries latest efforts collecting stats and views around safe isolation. Much of the solutions are sat in the realms of attitudes, skills and supply chain setup. While we have tenders and PPM programs led largely on price what do we expect? All value engineered out. We now have supply chains and contractors without the workforce or finances to train apprentices. Cuts to time frames, materials and even basics like access equipment and correct application of RAMS. The solutions in my opinion and this is something I have long since repeated are not fast, do not involve the short courses “re training/specialism training” the training sector seems obsessed with. They are found in long term efforts to provide high quality apprenticeships across construction and properly support the employers in delivering that alongside training providers. Its not cheap, its not fast and it doesn’t involve a nice buzz word like CPD. What happened at Grenfell was catastrophic and if we cant have the wisest minds in construction and government break that down and ensure it never happens again faster than a time frame of a decade..... scandalous imho. In the niche of the electrical industry we have had “communities” spring up declaring knowledge and superiority beyond that of the industry of things. This is not that. Indeed some of those people who set agendas within the realms of ethics, rigor, honesty and such were far from those things. Under mining others with ideas, communities and in some cases secretly recording people to get them fired. Same people now marketing and raising a profile on the back of that awful tragedy. It can be argued apprentice 121 is another of those communities doing niche things but ultimately with microscopic impact. That is reality. All be it with the intent of doing it with an element of decency to all. My trust and hope is that “the industry of things does what is needed before it really is to late and in the meantime employers with the capability and opportunity do all they can to train people of the future. To solve these issues requires government and industry led initiatives and a real drive to want to deliver them. Just a view. #construction #grenfell

Addressing the climate crisis is going to require way more electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers and other specialized construction tradespeople than we have today. That’s why it’s so encouraging to read the stats in this piece: Gen Z is driving a spike in vocational school enrollment and demand for paid apprenticeships, and that’s because these non-college career paths offer good, family-sustaining wages and an opportunity for entrepreneurship.

Trade education is important to start ASAP. It is NEVER too late to learn in times when common trade knowledge is obsolete.

A CHILD WILL BE A CHILD, SOME WILL BE ROOFERS AND THAT’S OK!! 💪💪 TEACH YOUR KIDS A SKILLED TRADE ❤️❤️ If you think your child may be an ideal candidate for a career in the skilled trades, starting that conversation can help them see the benefits of going into an apprenticeship instead of undergrad. Many people have the preconceived idea that the skilled trades don't offer competitive wages. In fact, these blue collar jobs can pay just as much or more than jobs that are traditionally thought of as well-paying. It might help to have some examples handy to prove your point, as your child may be more willing to believe actual statistical data than just what Mom or Dad tells them. Did you know in many post-grad apprenticeships, apprentices earn college credits? Some even finish with an associates degree at no cost. "Nearly 80% of respondents in Jobber’s survey said their parents wanted them to go to college." In our work, we find most high school students that already know they want to go in to a trade have a family member they've seen make a career off it. Choosing a lifelong career at 17, 18 is scary - especially if you don't know anyone in the field you're interested in. Central Midwest Carpenters has Representatives and Outreach Specialists (like Hope Harp!), visiting classrooms, technical schools, and career days constantly to make up for the decades parents and educators spent pushing kids into college and student debt. Now we're seeing students taking control of their career; picking trades like carpentry or welding because classroom learning isn't for them, they like figuring something out with their hands, or getting to physically see what they accomplish at the end of the day. They can make those choices confidently by visiting apprenticeship training centers, talking to instructors about the path, with the support of their high school teachers and their family, even when their families work in healthcare or tech. Be that bridge for young people into a career they love. Learn more about apprenticeships, skilled trades, and alternative postgrad options. https://lnkd.in/dp_TjaE7

We do have many qualified tradesmen in blue coler business in the country who've been aspired to be professionals in their field of interest, however most of them fail to go through trainings to achieve Trade Certificates to deem them competent. This also includes vocational and college graduates. Most applicants that applies try their very best to get through by faking the trade certificate to convince the employers for employment. Recruiters condemns and discourages such practice as it is fraudulent and deceitful. Employers are different, depending on the type of the industries. Most would go for reference attached with CVs to take as credentials, but all go for Trade Certificates that comes with higher package with full time employment. National Apprenticeship and Trade Testing Board (NATTB) is one recommendation I would urge, all aspiring Tradesmen and those that are already on field to register your skills to be a true Tradesmen. You can always enquire at your Provincial Labour and Industrial Department for more help and advice. Please share to those who might need this piece. Any Officer from mentioned department can kindly drop comments for awareness as well.

Great article by the WSJ - spot on! Seyer Industries, Inc. has a nationally-recognized, award-winning apprenticeship program that pays all education-related expenses AND pays for on-the-job-training. Apprentices graduate in three years, debt free and with a guaranteed job. It's a pretty sweet deal!
