How To Talk To Teens About Drugs Why "Just Say Know" Needs To Replace "Just Say No" Teen drug overdoses hit an all-time high in 2022, killing the equivalent of a high school classroom of youth each week, according to a new report in The New England Journal of Medicine. Drug overdoses and poisonings are now the third-leading cause of children’s deaths in the U.S., after firearm-related injuries and motor vehicle crashes. In this edition of Teen Health Today, I share five strategies that work, along with resources to implement them well. Link: https://lnkd.in/gw65Dsk2

Sports Rehab & Performance Physical Therapist. I help high achievers stay in the game and get back to doing what they love at a high level
WHY PHYSICAL THERAPISTS ARE CRUCIAL IN THE FIGHT AGAINST OPIOID ABUSE The opioid epidemic is more complex than just selfish or bad doctors trying to flood the market (very small percentage of cases; these docs belong in jail.) Most opioid deaths are synthetic illicit fentanyls smuggled from overseas. And a fair amount come from good docs trying to do the right thing but maybe overprescribing because lack the education or resources to best manage pain. OR, even more often, these docs were prescribing moderately but were intimidated into abruptly cutting people off entirely. People who were managed with moderate success that then turn to the black market. THIS is where physical therapy comes in. We can help people on moderate doses gradually reduce their pain, mainly by improving their ability to perform higher level tasks at lower pain levels. And by this, physicians can carefully and precisely wean patients from opioids with success and no one is abruptly booted from something they relied on.

Diagnosing Alzheimer’s With Blood Tests: Almost There 10/5/24 In this study carried out in Sweden, the measurement of two blood bio markers - plasma percentage of p-tau217 alone and combined with the Aβ42:Aβ40 plasma ratio (the amyloid probability score 2 [APS2]) - had high diagnostic accuracy for identifying AD among individuals with cognitive symptoms in primary and secondary care using predefined cutoff values. The participants had either: a) subjective cognitive decline b) mild cognitive impairment or c) dementia Use of the tests had very high AUCs (>0.95), positive predictive values (PPV) and negative predictive values (NPV) with diagnostic accuracy that FAR EXCEEDED that or primary care doctors or dementia specialists !! Confirmation of these eye-opening results in other populations is needed. If similar diagnostic accuracies are achieved, these blood tests will 1) supplant the need for lumbar puncture (much more difficult and expensive) and 2) allow for institution of available anti-tau medications which may have a greater impact when Alzheimer’s is diagnosed EARLY. Moreover, these tests will provide a much easier endpoint target to study in clinical trials of potential new treatments. Love science ! #Alzheimers #dementia #diagnosis https://lnkd.in/e4iN9te7

As practitioners who administer IV ketamine for people seeking relief from depression in a safe and medically monitored environment, this kind of negligence is distressing to see. This case reinforces the importance of clinical and psychological safety in this space. Clinicians taking advantage of vulnerable people is never acceptable, and we're glad to see some accountability occurring. In the aftermath of Matthew Perry's death, we compiled the following article emphasizing how much the details of ketamine care matter (setting, dosage, route of administration, patient fit, etc.) to ensure the best outcomes, patient safety, and wellbeing. To read the article, visit the link below. https://lnkd.in/exzqEyPf If you have patients who feel concerned by what they're reading, we welcome you to share this content. Our patients reinforced how reassuring and helpful they found this context, especially as loved ones express concern and confusion. #EmberHealth #mentalhealth #ketamine

Glaucoma runs in families. There is at least a four-times higher risk of developing glaucoma if you have a close blood relative who has it. And even having a more distant relative with glaucoma can give you some increased risk. This means it’s even more important to have your eyes tested regularly. If you’re living with #glaucoma, encourage your family and friends to attend sight tests every two years. Glaucoma can be treated. The earlier it is detected, the more successful the treatment is likely to be in controlling it and preventing sight loss. Most people with early glaucoma have no symptoms. That’s why it is so important to ensure that your relatives have regular eye examinations. #GlaucomaAwarrenessWeek
