Since the news about Sir Chris Hoy I thought long and hard about this post. Linked In is a professional, not personal, platform and of course personal stories affect others-opening up their deeply personal information which isn’t always yours, or right, to share. Also, there’s the risk it misses the mark and looks all “look at ME” rather than the actual message. But it’s an important issue, so on balance, and with those caveats, here goes. We will soon lose a much-loved member of my immediate family to this disease. Like Sir Chris the diagnosis was too late, too aggressive. I often wonder if it could have been different. Spurred on by the sobs of another member of the family and I down the phone as we processed this news, another and entirely symptom-free immediate- family member *demanded* in that very stern Yorkshire I-mean-business way to have the PSA test “for peace of mind” (you can see where this is going) only to discover they, too, have the diagnosis, though so thankfully at the much more positive end of the scale. That second phone call was awful, but let me tell you, not nearly so awful as the first. But it wouldnt have happened without the pro-active decision to demand the test, nevermind actually have it. We’d never have known. Its never nice to be prodded and poked, but hey, as between phone call 1, and phone call 2, just do it. Book the appointment now. (For the older readership who recall Father Ted “go on go on, go on” etc…) Here endeth the lecture (do it, do it now…)
