For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." A huge shout out to Sofia Connors, Sydney Crowley, Christian Haro, Juan Herdoiza, and Bright Lee for your outstanding work on this project! District Manager-Mesa Conservation District, Research & Development- Matrix Resource Technologies & Matrix Research Institute (non-profit)
I highly recommend STEM majors applying for the Colorado Science and Engineering Policy Fellowship. This fellowship was one of the most important experiences of my education. #stem #scienceandtechnology #policychange #engineering
2024 Application Deadline Approaching! The last day to apply for the 2024 fellowship class is March 4th! For the past six years, the Colorado Science and Engineering Policy Fellowship has given talented STEM students policy-making experience while broadening their understanding of the connection between STEM disciplines and lawmaking. We are looking to welcome another group of incredible fellows to the Capitol this coming summer! Read what one of last year's Fellows had to say about the fellowship: "The Fellowship helped me contextualize the technical college education I'm pursuing and gave me a lot of hope in state government. I really enjoyed learning from a wide range of people working passionately to improve the lives of Coloradans, which also gave me a better idea of possible career paths that lie at the intersection of science and policy. I had such a great experience this summer and can't recommend it enough!" - Megan Finnigan, Engineering Physics and Mechanical Engineering, CU Boulder https://lnkd.in/dzzbWgdF

An incredible and rewarding experience completing my first year as a Professor of Public Policy at the University of Redlands 🎉 Engaging students and watching them learn was a joy. Thank you to all my students for an unforgettable year. We all need to remember that at the heart of a university is its classes and students’ collective learning experience 📚 Below are some humbling comments from my students. Your feedback encourages me to continue improving! *"Professor Aguilera is one of the few professors in which I have the outmost respect for based on how he treats his students. He listens and recognizes the external stressors and other classes of his students appropriately while also engaging them throughout class." *"He makes us aware of many extracurricular activities and opportunities such as internships, fellowships, clubs, and more, all of which would help us have a future career in public policy or just expand our learning overall." *"Very informative and made public policy as somebody who’s never dabbled in it, interesting. He keeps students involved in the subject and he made me interested in furthering my career in some form of public policy." *"His amicability. He's just incredibly easy to talk to. Because of that, it doesn't feel like he's too intimidating to ask questions, while also knowing what he's talking about enough to be the guide of the discussion." *"An amazing, well-rounded professor! Would take his class again. I would highly encourage people to take this course."

M.A., Educational Policy and Leadership Studies (Higher Education and Student Affairs), University of Iowa
What's a master's degree in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies (Higher Education & Student Affairs concentration) from the University of Iowa College of Education without practical application? Aside from the practicum opportunities, internships, capstone [projects], and research exposure that the HESA program at the University of Iowa exposes you to, writing opinion pieces and advising policy-makers on how to improve the status of higher education and college student support are other ways you are prepared to become a relevant student affairs professional. I invite you to read my conversation with the Vanguard Newspaper on how the Nigerian government can enhance higher education with student-centric reforms, proper investments, and more. https://lnkd.in/djKx9xq5
