Today I met with Atlantic Housing Ministers. We agreed on a number of key priorities including: building more homes in factories, recognizing Atlantic Canada’s unique needs in our housing catalogue, and accelerating home building in communities across Atlantic Canada. La crise du logement au Canada n’est pas près de s’atténuer. Nous devons envisager une approche à long terme, fondée sur des faits, qui implique une collaboration entre le gouvernement, l’industrie et d’autres parties prenantes afin de créer des solutions durables pour répondre aux besoins du Canada en matière de logement. Comme l’explique Mary Van Buren, présidente de l’ACC, dans un récent article d’opinion, « nous avons besoin d’investissements dans les infrastructures qui soient réalisés en fonction des besoins réels des Canadiens - des projets qui méritent d’être mis en œuvre plutôt que d’être simplement prêts au lancement. Nous avons besoin d’un plan qui apporte des certitudes, afin que les investissements privés puissent être réalisés, que les travailleurs puissent être recrutés et conservés, et que les projets puissent être planifiés et réalisés. Here are some interesting stats compiled by Deloitte for the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (https://lnkd.in/eb-ghFwK): - Across OECD countries, on average total community housing (as opposed to single family dwellings) is 7% of total stock. - In order for Canada to reach this 7% benchmark by 2030 it will need to build 371,600 community housing units. - Building these community housing units will add $67B to $179B more to the economy than if we were to replace this approach by continuing to build more single family dwellings. - To create 371,600 community homes by 2030 we need 1/4 of all homes built each year, up until 2030, to be community homes. > My additional thoughts: #CommunityLedHousing can really help move these numbers along. On average, a CLH project creates 20 homes per project. Because they are led by #CitizenDevelopers working in their own local areas, the projects can adjust to meet diverse cultural and geographic needs, fit into all size communities, and can be scaled to just a couple units or as many as a few hundred. With over 8000 listed communities in Canada, at an average of 20 units per project, the CLH sector could contribute 160k community homes (almost half of that 370k+ goal) by 2030. Those are the stats we (Reclaim Community CDO) are working with in setting up the CLH Ecosystem Support Network to pool CLH knowledge, expertise and project groups together to help make this kind of impact on the housing crisis. But it's also not just about numbers .... community-led projects are just better. There are many reasons for this, but in short: they tend to be more environmentally and socially sustainable, there is more social capital within the community (people who have helped and will help one another), less loneliness, higher levels of fitness and wellbeing, designed to be more community-centred, more sharing/distribution of resources leading to less consumption and reduced carbon footprints, lower cost of living .... et al.
