🔦 on research: Eric Marvin, DO, neurosurgeon, is working on research that could reduce side effects and surgical interventions for older adults with chronic subdural hematomas. Dr. Marvin, in collaboration with third-year neurosurgery resident Kristine Ravina, MD, are recipients of our Research Acceleration Program (RAP) award: a grant that funds our employees to start clinical, biomedical or behavioral research projects. When older adults experience a head injury—even a relatively minor one—blood can collect between the skull and the surface of the brain, where it can cause symptoms ranging from headache to paralysis or coma. Dr. Marvin's research could potentially lead to the development of a sustained local drug delivery release system for treating this condition. This new treatment option could help patients avoid additional surgeries after an initial operation. There is also potential to reduce hospital stays and improve patient outcomes. Stay tuned here on LinkedIn for more RAP recipient highlights! OUT NOW! The FALL 2024 Issue of the #FBINewsletter: "How the Neurosurgical Suite Has Become an Active Laboratory for Research at Mount Sinai". 👉 https://lnkd.in/e8A6mEEH Conceived more than a decade ago, the Living Brain Project (LBP) showcases the unique collaborative environment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai by reimagining the neurosurgical operating room of today as the human brain laboratory of the future. The LBP study population is composed of individuals undergoing elective #DeepBrainStimulation (DBS) surgery for neuropsychiatric conditions, including #ParkinsonsDisease, #ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder, essential tremor, #Dystonia, #TouretteSyndrome, or treatment-resistant #Depression. An unprecedented quantity and diversity of data are collected from each LBP participant, which is used to characterize brain function from the level of single molecules in single cells all the way to determining the traits that make us human—thoughts, memories, emotions, and behaviors. In this issue of the FBINewsletter, Learn More about the work of Alexander Charney, MD, PhD, and Brian Kopell, MD, Co-Directors of the Living Brain Project.
