Physician Leadership is the Key to Physician Wellbeing. Learn proven tools from our 40,000 doctor experience to lead with influence, respect, support, balance and power. My Physician Leadership Coaching Practice is Open.
US PHYSICIANS ARE TRUE WORKAHOLICS AND this is a uniquely American phenomenon. Here's how I know this to be true. I have trained over 40,000 doctors to date, in the USA and Australia England and Canada. I will often stand at the front of a meeting room where several hundred doctors are gathered for a Medical Staff Meeting and ASK: **How many of you have a two-week vacation on your calendar right now? ** 👉 Less than 5% of the hands will go up in an American audience. The rest of the audience just frowns, looks down at their toes and shakes their head slowly back and forth. 👉 Outside of the USA all the hands go up and they shrug their shoulders and look at me LIKE I'M CRAZY to ask the question. It's a stark difference and just one more way the USA is a uniquely unhealthy healthcare system. A solid two-week, work-free vacation is a key component of a healthy physician's personal wellness strategy. Just ask any doctor who has developed this habit. For most, it is the ONLY TIME they can completely relax and let go But ONLY IF they DO NOT take calls or check messages or emails while out of town. We have even developed checkout checklists and specific dialog to let your staff and partners know YOU ARE OFF LINE WHEN ON VACATION Details from the Study: Researchers mailed surveys to 3671 members of the American Medical Association from 2020 to 2021, and 1162 (31.7%) responded. Another 6348 (7.1%) responded to an email survey sent to 90,000 physicians. An analysis suggested the respondents were representative of all US practicing physicians. Among 3024 respondents who responded to a subsurvey about vacations, about 40% took more than 15 days of vacation over the past year, about 40% took 6-15 days, and about 20% took 5 or fewer days. Fewer than half of physicians said their electronic health record (EHR) inboxes were fully covered by others while they were away. About 70% said they worked while on vacation, with nearly 15% working an hour or more each day. Emergency physicians were the least likely and anesthesiologists were the most likely to take at least 15 days of vacation per year, according to the study. https://lnkd.in/gE7xDEVC

Working in the healthcare industry can present unique challenges when it comes to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Many healthcare roles, such as physicians, nurses, and emergency responders, require long and irregular hours in order to provide around-the-clock care for patients. The demanding schedule and high-stress nature of these jobs can lead to burnout if proper steps are not taken to prioritize self-care. However, healthcare employers are increasingly recognizing the importance of supporting their workforce and implementing policies to promote better work-life integration. This may include offering flexible scheduling, generous paid time off, access to mental health resources, and encouraging employees to take breaks and vacations. While the fast-paced nature of healthcare work will always present challenges, healthcare professionals can strive to find ways to maintain a healthy balance between the demands of their career and their personal life. Setting boundaries, practicing stress management techniques, and taking advantage of the resources provided by employers can help healthcare workers avoid exhaustion and continue providing excellent patient care. #healthcarerecruitment #worklifebalance #nhscareers

🫢 A controversial take on UEC weekend rotas 🤔 Staffing UEC Clinical rotas are tricky as national contracts allow for a maximum of 1:3 rostered weekends. 🗓️ Doctors can work every day of the working week, but only every third weekend, leaving weekends short & dependant on locum. 🥸 For consultants it is even fewer, with hardly any consultant rotas rostering more than 1:5 weekends. And unlike elective service demand: Weekday UEC demand: 🚑🚑🚑🩼🩼🩼🩼🩼 ≈ Weekend UEC demand: 🚑🚑🚑🩼🩼🩼🩼 How do you ◼️ this ⚫? You need bodies without the hours: the simplest way to achieve this is to have more doctors work fewer hours. 😷😷😷=3 doctors 🕓🕓🕓 🕔🕔🕔 🕔🕔🕔 =12 shifts 😷😷😷😷=4 doctors 🕓🕓🕓🕓 🕔🕔🕔🕔=12 shifts Given the high level of burn out reported in emergency medicine, there is an additional wellbeing benefit in offering part time, rather than full time posts as a standard. All my staff on 80% contracts say going part time improved their overall wellbeing. I am on an 80% contract. This benefits our weekend rotas at the same time as our wellbeing.

🙌🏽all of this! I am particularly interested in the reduction of load and co-leadership ideas. A leader leads a team of people. But I think we sometimes overlook building a team around leaders. Leadership can be isolating, and also covertly competitive. Perhaps building more effective teams of and for leaders can be beneficial. Ps: I also think this is true of the direct care teams- more responsibility is not the answer. Less is more works well for wasabi and Frank’s hot sauce. Not so much with work that centers around people and supporting people.
Partner & CEO at Synova Associates LLC Nurse Leadership Company | Keynote Speaker I Crisis Counselor
A must read: At our last Executive Lunch in November Synova Nurse Leaders discussed the challenging topic of how to keep Nurse Leaders engaged and support their well-being. So many ideas came from that discussion: *Shorter work weeks for leaders (4 days) *One Day a week work from home *Flexible work hours to combat commuting fatigue *Mandatory PTO (must take a certain amount per year) *Peer-to-peer on-call to cover PTO and Vacations *Compensation for leaders when they are called into staffing *Reducing amount of direct reports and creating co-managing positions for larger units The interesting thing was that many hospital systems are trialing these with high success rates and yet leaders are nervous to champion these types of retention strategies. If we want strong leaders in positions we have to find out what they value and it isn't always financial compensation. Most leaders want to be able to take quality time for themselves in a way that they value. Beckers has compiled some interesting data on this topic and I whole heartedly agree- let leaders identify what they value. Be flexible with time-off requests. Put supports in place so leaders can not feel consistently overwhelmed with their job responsibilities. So leaders are you in a work environment that is doing any these for leaders and if so how do you feel about it? #truth #CEO #nurseleadership #nursingeducation
