Mid-levels, it's not your fault. During an initial conversation with a candidate, I dig into what they're looking for moving forward. Sometimes their expectations aren't aligned with the reality of the market. Why is that? Mid-levels, you experienced market turbulence early in your careers. You experienced completely remote work. You or your colleagues easily switched practice areas, typically from ANYTHING to corporate. You saw how "easy" it was to move from mid-size firms to Big Law. You saw six-figure signing bonuses on top of guaranteed year-end bonuses. For associates! It's not your fault that you expected those to last. It's all you knew! The reality is that those were exceptional times. That's not the current market and is unlikely to happen again any time soon. You are unlikely to find a fully remote associate role.
