Let me geek out on visual perception for a moment… I visited the Chuck Close exhibition at Pace Gallery in Chelsea—the first presentation of Close's work there since his death in 2021. Known for his groundbreaking approach to conceptual portraiture, Close transformed photographic portraits into meticulously gridded paintings. From a visual perception standpoint, his technique of breaking down photographic images into gridded compositions challenges the viewer's perception, compelling us to engage both with the individual components and the whole image simultaneously. This dual engagement taps into the brain's feature integration theory, which suggests that the visual system analyzes objects in terms its individual features (color, shape, size, etc.) before integrating them into a coherent whole.
