The lighter than expected #jobs report on Friday renewed investor enthusiasm for interest rate cuts. Still, #biotech companies continue to be buffeted by higher capital costs. To some extent, their capital requirements may be getting crowded out by the massive financing needs of the AI buildout , as well as enabling industries, such as power generation and grid realignment. Enormous federal deficits also absorb capital which could otherwise find productive uses in the private sector. All of this means that biotech founders must continue to husband resources, carefully manage cash assets including maintaining multiple depositories, and search out appropriate pharma partnerships. Above all, be sure that your therapeutic target, and approach to that target, not be one which has already attracted multiple competitors.

A few days ago I saw a commercial on TV for a once-a-day anti-HIV pill. The payoff was "The most convenient option". A once-a-day pill to keep HIV undetectable in one's blood. It was a jarring moment. I am old enough to remember PSAs about avoiding HIV infections, about this mysterious, incurable disease that was spreading around. Why do I bring it up? Because the post below is 100% spot-on. Changes in cost and availability of capital - and the globally tightening reimbursement environment - are clearly creating powerful headwinds for pharma. However, let's not forget a third force that is reshaping the life sciences: the monumental success of so many moonshots. From multiple sclerosis to HIV and to many forms of cancer, what once were devastating diagnoses have become chronic diseases with multiple lines of therapy and well-established protocols. This should be celebrated, and considered when thinking about the capital needs and growth opportunities in the industry.

Biotech has always been looked upon as a niche. But if you can carefully look at the trends and stats, Biotech is going to be the prime field that would attract huge job opportunities. The pivotal point is when Biotech became a product industry which is driven by datas, technology, people & marketing. Research and lab skills will still exist but might not contribute to more than 10-20% of the Biotech workforce. The new Biotech industry requires a whole new level of skillsets that will cater to 80% of the jobs. And Bversity is so glad to launch "India's only PG program in Bioinformatics" that is build for the industrial needs. This curriculum will contribute to the shift in the industry that will cater to majority of the jobs in future. Do know more about the program: https://lnkd.in/g_uinCHQ #bversity #biotech

Very strongly have been preaching to stay in the biotech industry to all the folks who come have a conversation with me, saying they want a career shift. You might think pay is less. We have a lot of roles in a biotech firm where the pay starts with 6 LPA. Because today SAAS & product industry pay really well, we expect the same from all industries. Indeed staying in Biotech industry would be a wiser choice as biological data, healthtech & diagnostics market are being disrupted like never before. 10 years from now we wouldn't have more of coding job roles, but a lot more of biotech & life science job roles. One huge contribution Bversity is trying to add up to this space is to save 'Man years' and accelerate a Biotechnologists career in this space. Saving a million man years is the ambitious project we are on ! #Bversity #biotech

Principal Scientist in Process Development | Engaged Team Lead & Manager | Passionate About Developing New Biologics Treatments for Unmet Medical Needs
Many mid-range and senior roles in biotech have the requirement that the candidate needs a PhD. But do they really? Does a person with a PhD and no industry experience have more of the skills needed for the position than a person with a BS and eight years of experience? Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes the answer is no - but limiting your candidate pool artificially may result in missing out on the best person for the role! I've expanded my initial writing on this topic into today's blog post, including some viewpoints from the great discussion in the comments. "So what should a hiring manager do? Hire for the skills you want and need, not for a specific combination of degree and experience. Consider carefully what skills the role requires – basic benchwork or advanced design of experiments (DOE), project leadership or protocol execution, employee management or individual contributions, etc. – and look for candidates who can demonstrate those skills and solve the problems needed in the role, regardless of their background. Build the interview process to probe for the skills needed, regardless of whether they came from an advanced degree program or from industry experience, and don’t assume that a given skill will come from one or the other. After all, there are plenty of industry scientists with stellar project management skills despite not having a PhD, and there are plenty of academic scientists who have amazing benchwork skills despite never having seen an industry lab. And neither of these types of scientists are likely to be good people managers unless they get the proper training and support from their own supervisors along the way!" Are you hiring inclusively? Are you looking to solve problems and find the right skills match? Or does your company just care about the number of PhD's on the employee roster?
