Today is National Closing The Gap Day. On the third Thursday in March each year, Australians are encouraged to refocus their efforts on Closing the Gap. "Close the Gap" refers to government policies to reduce disparities between First Nations Peoples and the broader population in areas like education, health, employment, and housing. Monitored by the Productivity Commission, these policies began in 2008 with six targets, later expanding to 19 in 2020. Despite efforts, the gaps persist, prompting a renewed focus on involving First Nations communities in policy design through collaboration with the Coalition of Peaks. What can you do? ➡️ 5 Things you can do to help Close the Gap: https://lnkd.in/gZkvDC7Q ➡️ Get involved with Close the Gap https://lnkd.in/gDTsE_wD ➡️ How businesses can do more to help Close The Gap: https://lnkd.in/gAUHRGY5 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dKjNJZv

Safe Landing member Todd Smith 🌱🌍👨✈️ joined hundreds of people at an event in Windsor this weekend to promote an upgrade to democracy. The event was highlighting the success of a form of deliberative democracy called a Citizen’s Assembly (CA). CA’s are at the cutting edge of political science and have been used on very divisive topics like the abortion debate in Northern Ireland or same sex marriages. The assembly process is similar to a jury service where expert advice is presented for participants to deliberate on, however not only are the members selected at random but there’s also a sortion process. This sortion process provides an accurate snap shot of a countries’ demographic. This ensures all voices are heard and represented with an equal opportunity to contribute to the outcome. The assemblies have proven to be an antidote to polarisation with both sides of the debate accepting both the outcome and that the process is fair. Given that climate & ecological breakdown can be a bit of a hot potato for politicians who do not want to lose some of their popularity with voters, this process can empower the people to make common sense decisions through the collective wisdom of the assembly. This can then help the politicians follow the recommendations and do what’s best for our shared future, free from vested interests or short term thinking. For more information on Safe Landing’s perspective and our recent ‘Worker Assembly’ in Bristol, please read our blog at https://lnkd.in/eCQHqRBM Do you feel an aviation specific ‘Worker Assembly’ could help empower workers to positively transform our industry, free from the short term thinking of board members and politicians? #aviation #climatecrisis #deliberativedemocracy

With murmurs of a post-election return of the previous Labour government’s 2009 Total Place policy, it's interesting to consider its relevance in today's landscape. Total Place, born out of the financial crisis, aimed to revolutionise public services through collaboration and efficiency. Fast forward to 2024, the idea resurfaces from a growing appetite for integrated approaches and shared accountability. In this article, John Copps asks what a revival of Total Place can offer to public services today, and whether it might make it into any of the manifestos of political parties at the end of the year. 🔗 To understand why we think Total Place could be a vital step to tackle the issues facing public services today, read John’s insights in the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eGjqc7Kc #TotalPlace #PublicServices #PolicyInnovation #LocalAuthority #PublicSector #LocalGov #LocalGovernment #PlaceLeadership

Public Services - Radical Place Leadership - Chief Exec at Mutual Ventures - #RadicalReformers Podcast - Poverty Strategy Commission - Non-Exec PossAbilities CIC - CCIN Values and Principles Board
More thoughts on #TotalPlace from the Mutual Ventures team. This from my colleague John Copps. Total Place (or something like it) could be more relevant now than when it was last in existence nearly 15 years ago. Main points: 1 - Public services are subject even greater financial constraints and collaborative place-based working may now be the ONLY way to make public service finances sustainable. 2 - #TotalPlace provides a framework suited to dealing with the increasingly complex problems people are facing in their lives. 3 - Collaboration is increasingly emphasised above competition and the promise of devolution is encouraging local services to work together.
