TAILINGS MINING: “It’s quite ironic. We’ve been pretty much all over Africa looking for opportunities in terms of expanding our business and ultimately we’ve come back to South Africa and less than an hour from our corporate office, we have 1.1-million ounces of recoverable gold reserve here, and we acquired all of it for just over $1/oz,” Pan African Resources PLC CEO Cobus Loots. Today, the mining industry changed forever, for the better. A consolidated mining Standard is born. Any mine, producing any commodity, anywhere in the world will finally have a common blueprint for responsible practices - joining the almost 100 companies operating approximately 600 sites in 60 countries that we anticipate will apply it across ICMM, World Gold Council, The Copper Mark and Mining Association of Canada once finalised and launched. This would give it the widest coverage to date of any voluntary mining Standard. Indigenous People, local communities, investors, governments and others will finally get the clear and consistent Standard they have asked for to have confidence in our sector - including through its multi-stakeholder governance. I'm so grateful to the representatives of these groups that formed the Stakeholder Advisory Group to guide the development of this. All towards a global industry that consistently improves lives and protects the environment while producing the commodities essential to modern life. For the next 60 days, you get to shape it. Did we miss something? Is a Performance Expectation not set at the right level? What did we get right, that we should absolutely retain? Have your say via the Public Consultation below. When this effort began over 2 years ago, many people said it couldn't be done. That it was too hard to consolidate four separate Standards and create a multi-stakeholder governance model that enjoys broad support. There are many challenges still to overcome, but I'm so proud of my colleagues who didn't listen to the naysayers, and have today put our sector and everyone impacted by it firmly on the path to an ever better future.
📢 Exciting News! The first public consultation for the consolidated mining standard is now open! We invite all interested stakeholders to participate and share your views on the draft standard, governance model, assurance process, reporting and claims policy through our online consultation portal. Your feedback is imperative in helping to shape a standard and oversight system that serves the needs of stakeholders, sets a high bar for responsible mining and drives continuous improvement of environmental, social and governance practices throughout the value chain of individual metals and minerals. The first public consultation will last 60 days, ending on 16 December 2024 and is available in 8 languages. https://lnkd.in/ewRp-D8P ICMM Mining Association of Canada The Copper Mark World Gold Council

We want to share the newly released draft standard developed by the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative, designed to create a more navigable standards landscape for responsible mining. This effort is cosponsored by The Copper Mark, which oversees certification of the Zinc Mark, earned by numerous IZA members. We encourage our IZA members, already serving as sustainability leaders in the mining industry, to ensure that their voices are heard by providing feedback on this important initiative by the December 16th deadline. You can learn more about CMSI and share feedback here: https://lnkd.in/ewRp-D8P #Zinc #ZincForTheFuture #mining #sustainability #circularity

This year’s International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney promises to bring together a large number of participants from the global mining industry, including many of our colleagues and clients. Attendees José Ignacio Morán, John Mollard, Greg McNab, Kym Livesley and Urvashi Seomangal from the Dentons Global Mining Team bring different perspectives to the issues facing the industry right now, including these priorities: 1. How we are seeing our clients react to the continuing volatility in the critical mineral space, at least for some minerals such as lithium. Do the recent and just announced big deals bring back support for prices long term? 2. For the broader critical minerals space, are we seeing enough investment coming in the development of processing facilities to change the current control of the industry? How will rare earth elements production meet forecast demand? 3. In the gold and silver markets, are we expecting the price of mining stocks to catch up to the escalating price of the commodities they produce? Reach out to Jose, John, Greg, Kym and Urvashi if you plan to attend.
