Established in 2000 as an extension of the Generalized System of Preferences, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a preferential trading program aiming to boost U.S.-Africa trade, create greater economic opportunities, and encourage African countries to contribute to the global economic market. AGOA provides duty-free treatment to certain goods from specially designated sub-Saharan African nations. While AGOA symbolizes the United States’ continued efforts to strengthen U.S.-Africa trade relations, it is set to expire in 2025. Read more here. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in partnership with the African Union (AU) organizes an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) in Douala- Cameroon, on June 19th 2024. The meeting focused on the assessment and improvement of Intra-African Trade (BIAT) Action Plan, ensuring that it is in accordance with the transformative objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The meeting brought together participants from the RECs, the African Union Commission, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), academia and the private sector. EU-TMA Partnership Driving Trade Progress in the DRC In a high-level meeting led by the EU Head of Cooperation, the EU delegation in Kinshasa and TradeMark Africa (TMA) reviewed strategic milestones of EU-funded trade facilitation initiatives in the DRC. This collaboration focuses on transforming trade systems and empowering communities. Rwanda is hosting the second edition of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Business Summit dubbed Biashara Afrika, a forum that seeks to chart a new path towards deepening trade in the continent by inventing for the future.
