Happy Wolrd TB Day.Lets talk about the MOTT complex.
The MOTT complex, also known as non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), are a group of bacteria that can cause infections similar to tuberculosis (TB) but are not the same as the bacteria that cause TB. These bacteria are commonly found in soil and water and can infect humans through inhalation or ingestion.
The MOTT complex can cause a range of infections in humans, including lung infections, skin infections, and lymph node infections. In the case of TB-like infections caused by the MOTT complex, the bacteria can infect the lungs and lead to symptoms such as coughing, chest pain, fever, and weight loss.
The MOTT complex causes TB-like infections by entering the body and infecting the lungs, similar to how TB bacteria infect the body. The bacteria can then multiply and cause inflammation in the lungs, leading to the symptoms associated with TB-like infections.
Some examples of bacteria in the MOTT complex include Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), Mycobacterium abscessus complex, and Mycobacterium kansasii. These are just a few examples, as there are many different species of non-tuberculous mycobacteria that can cause infections in humans.
As the world learns from COVID-19 and discusses how to prepare for the next pandemic, we cannot forget that Tuberculosis remains a global public health emergency, causing nearly 1.3 million deaths each year, says Dr. Sílvia Kelbert.
People living with #HIV are especially at risk, which is why Jhpiego integrates these services into our HIV programs in collaboration with ministries of health, national TB and HIV programs, educational institutions and nongovernmental organizations. #EndTB
