Core Competence and Competitive Advantage of Nike Nike, a global giant in athletic footwear and apparel, has secured a formidable position in the market through a strategic alignment of its resources and capabilities, as assessed by the VRIN framework. This framework evaluates the Value, Rarity, Inimitability, and Non-Substitutability of a company's resources to decipher the core competencies that underpin its competitive advantage. Valuable : Nike's emphasis on innovation in athletic footwear and apparel, coupled with strong marketing and branding, creates significant value for customers who seek high-performance and stylish sportswear. Rare : Nike's partnerships with top athletes, its proprietary technologies like Nike Air, and exclusive collaborations with designers contribute to the rarity of its products in the market. Inimitable: Nike's global brand recognition, extensive supply chain management, and continuous investment in research and development make it challenging for competitors to imitate its unique product offerings and market presence. Non substitutable: The strong brand loyalty and association with sports and fitness culture make Nike's products less substitutable, as consumers often choose Nike for its quality and iconic branding. The VRIN framework helps illuminate the core competencies that form the basis of Nike's competitive advantage. Key elements like innovation, brand partnerships, and global presence contribute to Nike's sustained advantage in the athletic apparel and footwear industry. These core competencies enhance its ability to meet customer needs, differentiate from competitors, and maintain a strong market position. #Ansusarawilson #nike #MBA22-24 #MBAfebruary2024 #strategicmanagement #Dhruva Dr. Sudeep B. I work with bold leaders to build teams that grow and improve profitable businesses. Better Teams get Better Results. ✪ Follow for posts and insights about ambition and leadership.
Today we're talking about Nike What went wrong. We explored how the footwear (and sportswear icon) lost their mojo and how brands like adidas, Reebok (much cooler), HOKA (much better) and On Running CZ/SK (more innovative) have outmaneuvered Nike. - They cut cost - and in the process cut important functions - They made assumptions about the decline of in-person retail that turned out to be quite flawed - They also adversely affected their culture - which as we all know is what fuels great brands and great experiences. - They accelerated an investment into direct-to-consumer (dtc) that wasn't wrong, but they disintermediated their distribution partners in the process Given that their incoming CEO Elliott Hill has a lifetime of experience at Nike, does he have enough distance to really shake things up? To challenge the status quo? To discuss the issues that must be discussed (but aren't being discussed)? To forge a path ahead that will bring everyone along with excitement and passion? The link to the conversation is in the comments. ** Interesting research from Claudius A. Hildebrand highlights the impact that a new CEO can have on a company's performance - in the markets and in reality 📈 And there is a real and perceived difference between an insider coming in vs an outsider taking over. Elliott Hill is an insider, and a new CEO. Does he have what Nike needs?

How a small shoe distributor revolutionized the world of sportswear... You all know Nike, right? But did you know that behind the iconic swoosh and "Just Do It" slogan, there's a tale of grit and innovation? Flashback to 1964. Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman launch Blue Ribbon Sports. Initially, they distribute Japanese running shoes in the U.S. Originally, Nike wasn't the sportswear giant we recognize today. No, no, no. Nike started as a small distributor with big dreams. Their breakthrough came in 1971 when they introduced their own line of footwear. And then came the swoosh. A logo designed by a student for just $35. This marked the beginning of something special. Fast forward to today. Nike is more than just shoes. It's apparel, equipment, and even tech-driven fitness solutions 🎧👟 With over 1,000 stores worldwide and countless endorsements from top athletes, Nike has become synonymous with performance and style 🌍🏅 A vision that transformed sportswear forever. Cheers 🥃

Nikes core competence lies in design, marketing and global distribution of athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessory. Efficient supply chain management and continual product innovation also contribute to its success. VRIN framework of NIKE 🔹Valuable: Nike's strong brand image, innovative product designs, and effective marketing strategies contribute to its value in the sportswear industry. 🔹Rare: Nike's extensive research and development efforts, combined with exclusive partnerships with athletes and sports teams, create a rarity that sets it apart from competitors. 🔹Inimitable: The company's focus on cutting-edge technology, such as Nike Air cushioning, and its global supply chain network make it difficult for competitors to replicate its unique capabilities. 🔹Non-Substitutable: Nike's strong relationships with suppliers, distinctive brand identity, and a vast distribution network contribute to its non-substitutability, making it challenging for competitors to replicate its overall package. Nike's Core Competence lies in its ability to continuously innovate, offering technologically advanced and stylish sportswear. Nike's Core Competence directly relates to the VRIN framework, as it aligns with the Rare and Valuable aspects, contributing to its Competitive Advantage.
