New features, bug fixes and stable tech stack choices will now more than ever take precedence over shiny new tech's POC, refactors and technical debt cleanups. - Full-Stack Proficiency: As teams become leaner, full-stack developers who can manage end-to-end product ownership are gaining prominence. Domain expertise will continue to exist but without the barrier of a specific language or framework. - Expanded Responsibilities: Engineers are increasingly expected to incorporate QA and DevOps tasks into their roles. Explore how you can perform these roles apart from development potentially aided by AI. - Cross-Platform Languages: Languages like JavaScript, TypeScript and Kotlin that operate across multiple environments enabling devs to work on the edge and the cloud together are becoming more valuable, especially as startups aim to streamline their tech stacks. - Business Acumen: Engineers who understand product and business aspects and contribute ideas for cost savings, productivity improvements, and revenue generation, will stand out. Talk about that feature you researched that the competitor has or that new SaaS tool that saves money, in your standups. - Career Resilience: Focus on building a strong professional brand through publishing blogs on your work, public speaking, and showcasing your work to enhance long-term career security. - AI Integration: Embrace AI tools like Claude daily and explore AI-powered plugins for your dev environments, communication apps, browsers, etc to boost productivity and quality of output. Software engineering has only been around for ~80 years and has grown dramatically. There's been a near-constant shortage of software engineers for many years; it's part of the reason software engineering compensation, starting in Silicon Valley and spreading from there, has gotten quite high! The idea that AI will replace all software engineers is comical. The Internet continues to penetrate more of the world, with over 5 billion users today (about 2 in every 3 humans), growing from ~63% to ~67% in the last ~3 years. Will AI change how the job of a software engineer is performed? Definitely, and I'm pretty excited about it! I also want to be able to work on my AR glasses so I'm not tethered to a desk, but that's a slightly different industry that needs to develop. Productivity increases are how technology grows the economic pie for the world, and while there are displacement effects from the changes, software engineers are building this technology; they are going to be needed to keep building and, perhaps more importantly, to maintain what's been built.
