Justin Ash there is speculation that a Starmer government would reintroduce similar policies to Blair, including ISTCs. The experience at Interhealth Canada was very positive for patients: >90% treated within 7 weeks of GP referral; zero HAIs; 99% NPS; excellent outcomes on eg Oxford Hip and Knee scores and PROMs, and costs c83% tariff. ISTCs increased capacity, and surgeons performed c300% of procedures that similar surgeons performed in NHS. There are lessons: - once Brown replaced Blair, contracts were cancelled, justifying the high political risk premium demanded by providers. This doesn’t happen in eg Germany where the choice to go to private providers is enshrined. - ISTCs weren’t allowed to participate in training rotas - ISTCs didn’t always do the full pathway, and we had issues with community physiotherapy Time for a grown up debate about lessons from ISTCs and countries such as Germany to empower patients to make choices to bring down waiting lists
The Times Health Commission published its final report yesterday. Among other recommendations, it called for the expansion of surgical hubs and said that these could be run by the private sector. Our CEO, Justin Ash is quoted in the report. He said: "The independent sector is 400-plus surgical hubs. It makes complete sense to use those that are already built rather than invest more capital to build NHS ones. More could be done and it would make a big difference to waiting lists" The Commission agrees, saying: “Involving the private sector would minimise capital expenditure and accelerate the programme (of high-intensity theatre lists)”.
