Futurist & Founder @ ANTICIPATE | Strategic Foresight & Innovation | Giving people and organizations the tools to explore and shape the futures
What does the futures hold for urban planning? 🏙️ Robotaxis, freedom from ownership, climate targets, community-driven citizens assemblies... I recently had the opportunity to join the American Planning Association 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 — a group dedicated to helping urban planners navigate change and prepare for an uncertain future. 💡 At its core, APA Foresight is about learning from the future: understanding the changes we can’t control, figuring out how to prepare for them, and knowing when to take action. Right now, they're working on the 2025 Trend Report, identifying key trends that could shape the future of urban planning. Here are three 'futures frictions' I shared at session: 🚖 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 With the rise of robotaxis and other shared transportation solutions, I'm curious about what will win in the future — owning your own car or using shared, autonomous vehicles. For shared mobility to succeed, it needs to be convenient, affordable, and good for the environment. Are we moving towards a future of freedom from ownership through shared vehicles, or do we still want freedom in ownership with our own cars? 🌍 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬? Many cities, like Copenhagen, have set ambitious goals to become carbon neutral, but what if we don’t quite make it? How do we keep pushing forward even when we fall short? Instead of just focusing on emission numbers, should we address the deeper causes of environmental harm? How do we keep up momentum for real change? 🌐 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 With global democracies facing challenges, there’s growing interest in local decision-making, like citizen assemblies and community engagement. Could this be the future — where more decisions are made locally? How can we strengthen our local communities while staying connected in a globalized world? A huge thank you to everyone in the community for the warm welcome and inspiring discussions. Excited to keep exploring how we can help urban planners navigate these changes! 👉 Check out the APA's 2024 Trend Report, done in partnership with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, here: https://lnkd.in/dZkn26HP What trends or frictions do you see shaping the futures of cities? 👇 #foresight #futures #trends #cities

I am going to be talking about this piece I wrote for Nautilus in the fall of 2020 on "flexible density" for Thomas J. Campanella's undergrad American urban history class at Cornell this spring. Re-reading it for the first time in more than 2 years it's a nice reminder to myself why I have totally checked out on the return to office / future of downtowns dialogues. All of those are assuming a static technology + threat picture. The real urban legacy of the pandemic is showing us that cities can radically change shape without breaking, and a radical rewriting of the limits of urban resilience far beyond anything we imagined possible. We need to harness it with new designs and plans. That's the stuff that will help us in the existential challenge of climate adaptation to come. https://lnkd.in/ej_P-Jq3

Our EU-funded project - what makes it so unique? As mentioned recently, we've received funding from the European Funds for Modern Economy for our project "Autonomous System for Detection and Alerting of Intrusion in the Hazard Zone around Construction Machinery." But what makes this project so innovative? Hybrid Sensor Technology: Our innovative sensor will ensure reliable detection of objects, particularly personell, even in extreme environmental conditions on construction sites, up to a distance of 10 meters. Real-Time Autonomous Operation: Our system operates autonomously in real-time, ensuring swift response to any potential risks. Both features are achieved while maintaining resilience to mechanical exposure and the harsh environmental conditions prevalent on construction sites. Follow us to stay updated with the latest developments on this project! #WiRan #Innovation #ConstructionSafety #EuropeanFunds
