About year ago my team was hiring mid Power BI Developer. From around 15 resumes which were delivered to me by HR department - they did screening part earlier - only 2 candidates had Portfolio of their Power BI Dashboards. I was very surprised... What happened is these two candidates instantly standed out from the crowd, because I was able to: - see result of their work. - see how they applied skills in practice. - evaluate how they design Dashboards. I had a feeling they treat Power BI job for real, because they spent private time to create personal portfolio. I will repeat that again and again: If you are applying for a job or if you want to start your career in Data Analytics BUILD your Portfolio and show it inside your job applications. I did that and it helped me to get invitation for interview, there I showcased my skills and got job offer. Portfolio won’t give you job offer, but can help you to get your chance on the interview. I've examined 1000+ CVs when hiring JR-MID Power BI Developers Here are the 3 things that stood out 1) 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆 People are hired to fill open roles, they need to fit into the team or project. With how broad Power BI is, 3 years of experience in Power Query is unfortunately not the same as 3 years doing Power BI Administration. The best CVs did more than list these ❌[Skills used: DAX, PowerQuery, Data Viz] But wrote how these provided value ✅Created Dynamic RLS with a SQL Table to reduce Admin ✅Used Power Query to modify Data Model into Star Schema 2) 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 Stakeholder management = 🏆🏆🏆 Your technical prowess won't shine if you can't explain your insights clearly or understand the needs of the business. These last items can help set us apart as they help provide simple, but crucial info to the end user. For example, adding the lastUpdated/nextUpdate (according to the schedule in PowerBI Service) and time line being analized can provide confidence about the information they see. LastUpdated can be visible while the next update can be placed in an information button 🔳 close to lastUpdated, for instance. This gets rid of two questions: how refresh is the information and when the most up-to-date information will be available.
