🔍 Interested in gaining a better understanding of the impact of the Kremlin’s disinformation within Western societies? The new Hybrid CoE Working Paper authored by Aiden Hoyle and Josef Šlerka challenges prevailing assumptions about the efficacy of Kremlin narratives in Western societies. Contrary to popular belief, the paper unveils empirical evidence of the enduring impact of the Kremlin’s disinformation on public discourse and societal perceptions. The report identifies three indicators to assess its impact: · the degree to which Kremlin narratives are repeated and disseminated; · insights drawn from opinion poll data; and · the way in which the Kremlin’s influence is manifested in public behaviour. The paper underscores the need for concerted research efforts to accurately gauge the impact of the Kremlin’s disinformation, as it is only through a nuanced and determined effort that the impact of disinformation can be discerned. 👉 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/dpCrFGW3 #Disinformation #Kremlin #InformationWarfare

Short but nonetheless important paper on how Russia is (still) having a toxic impact on public opinion and political discourses. It shows collective efforts to curb Russian disinformation like banning RT channels for example but "there are also many indications that the Kremlin’s influence persists in foreign societies, serving to shape public discourse and precipitate effects to an extent that should be a cause for concern for governments and policymakers." For all those who argue that the #rightextremists in Germany are too stupid to become a real danger: we have to take a global look.

It is notoriously difficult to assess the effectiveness of influence campaigns and to establish causality or correlation but this is a useful look at the efficacy of Russian narratives based on past and present activity. In short the report highlights there are several instances where narratives pushed by Kremlin disinformation outlets or amplified by Kremlin social media bots have led to tangible real-world effects, including those in the democratic arena where Russian disinformation campaigns have resulted in election interference.

We would like to present the article “The Attempted Destruction of Western Values” from issue 2/2023 of the scientific quarterly “Studia Europejskie – Studies in European Affairs” by Vija Sīle and Elīna Graudiņa from the Rīga Stradiņš University. In the article the authors prove that Ukraine, unlike Russia, defends value pluralism and the fundamental values of democracy, at both the national and the human level. On Sunday, the last day of the MPSA - Midwest Political Science Association Annual Conference, I gave my second presentation. This was a little more difficult because our research is still ongoing, and the individual subjects of study and the overall context may change. How can it be? Well, we are exploring the transformations that Russian society is currently going through. We set the task not to study Russia through the lens of macroeconomic indicators, emotional estimates, or often rare and unreliable - for obvious reasons - public opinion polls. We prefer to rely on more stable foundations - internal state statistics for regions and various social groups. We have found and are arguing that the sustained support for the Russian authoritarian regime from numerous groups—at least for now—has more tangible and pragmatic grounds than illusive Soviet mentality ressentiment or massive propaganda. From our point of view, these conclusions are worth keeping in mind to avoid political illusions and ill-developed forecasts. Many thanks to Dr. Oana Armeanu for her valuable suggestions to improve my conference paper.
