For four days Media Literacy Matters conference, organized as part of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024, offers insights to the present and future of Digital and Media Literacy.
I was honored to speak about media landscape in Palestine and MIL training in the area in the session on the importance of MIL in the times of conflict along with my Ukrainian collegue Valeria Kovtun and Maia Simonishvili from Georgia. Thank you Adeline Hulin for moderating the inspiring session.
What stood out to me as the most prominent overarching theme from the conference sessions yesterday was the state of democracy globally. Several sessions at least mentioned wars, autocracies, and information warfare, which are currently threats to democracy, education, and sustainable development. Even if conflicts are far away, in this digital and social media influence era, they increase instability, polarization, and reduce trust in existing structures and institutions everywhere. Since it is impossible to prevent or block all the disinformation, strengthening Media and Information Literacy skills is crucial.
