LYNX's Director for Government Affairs and Public Policy, Cherine Khallaf (PhD), spoke at Roche's North Africa Press Day in Cairo on the role of public policy in fostering public-private partnerships (PPPs.) In her intervention, Dr. Khallaf explained how PPPs create a structured framework that brings together diverse stakeholders to work towards common goals, such as improving breast cancer care. She added that #publicpolicy serves as a platform to facilitate knowledge sharing, identify the critical gaps in healthcare, and creating the space for the various actors,  governments, #NGOs, and the private sector, to contribute their expertise and resources to address these gaps. She also showcased how public policies gave an impetus to the healthcare sector in Egypt, through the #Presidentialinitiatives that secured the political support and the required resources to address the challenges of infrastructure and encouraged engagement from various sectors. NGOs, in particular, can offer valuable alternative perspectives on #patient_care and support, enriching the overall approach to tackling #breast_cancer. 🎯Strengthening Global Health Partnerships: Establishing IVI’s Kenya Office I had the privilege of joining partners from the Government of Kenya, Kenya BioVax Institute Limited (KBI) with Rabera Kenyanya & the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) with @Douglas N. Shaffer, Ondari D. Mogeni, Megha Pansuriya, in a 4-day negotiation workshop to establish the Host Country Agreement (HCA) for IVI’s office in Kenya. This agreement will serve as a formal treaty between the government of Kenya and IVI, providing essential support for the institution to operate and advance its mission effectively. The IVI Country Office in Kenya will embody IVI’s mission and vision across the country, as well as overseeing the Advancing Vaccine End-to-end Capabilities project for Africa (AVEC Africa Project). This project is dedicated to strengthening Africa's vaccine research and development ecosystem through end-to-end R&D projects and targeted capacity-building programs toward sustainable biomanufacturing in the continent. During the workshop, we conducted an in-depth review of each article within the HCA to ensure alignment and clarity for the future of IVI employees and partners. These discussions highlighted our shared commitment to IVI’s vision in Kenya, emphasizing sustainable health outcomes across Africa. Part-4: Investment Opportunities in Africa🌍 Today, let’s dive into the Healthcare sector of Africa. Africa faces a significant health burden, with only 3% of the world's qualified healthcare professionals but 25% of its disease burden. Alongside infectious diseases like malaria, TB, and AIDS, the continent is seeing a rise in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. This strains already weak healthcare systems, hindered by poor infrastructure, lack of access to medicines, and a shortage of qualified personnel. However, there is hope in the form of innovative African entrepreneurs addressing these challenges. Africa's healthcare market, currently worth $66 billion, is expected to reach $260 billion by 2030, presenting huge opportunities in primary healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics. Key players include: Zipline: A start-up founded in 2018 using drones to deliver vaccines and medicines across Ghana, Rwanda, and parts of Nigeria. It raised $190 million to expand to more African countries. Mpharma: Founded by Gregory Rockson in 2013, Mpharma operates community pharmacies across 9 countries. It raised over $65 million and serves over 2 million patients. DrugStoc: A Nigerian e-health company founded in 2015 to address drug procurement challenges. With $5 million in Series A funding, it aims to reach 100 million people in Nigeria and expand to West Africa. BlueCloud Health: Partnering with a Swiss investment firm, it is raising $30 million to develop a diagnostic device for Tuberculosis. Afreximbank and Africa CDC have renewed their partnership to boost Africa's health security. Today, on the sidelines of the Global Forum for Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation in Paris, France, at the Global Forum for Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation, Afreximbank announced a massive $2 billion commitment to the Africa Health Security Investment Plan. This initiative will focus on the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism (APPM) and the Platform for Harmonized African Health Products Manufacturing (PHAHM). This initiative is pivotal in addressing Africa’s health investment challenges, promoting economic development, and strengthening health security across the continent. It also intends to complement GAVI’s innovative financing mechanism, the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) which is set to provide up to USD 2 billion financing to African manufacturers of health and pharmaceutical products over the next ten years. Afreximbank and Africa CDC Pledge $2B Boost for African Health Manufacturing The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Africa CDC have formed an essential partnership by committing a $2 billion "Africa Health Security Investment Plan" facility. This initiative aims to strengthen the continent's health product manufacturing capabilities, addressing long-standing investment gaps and strengthening Africa's health security. The facility will focus on the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism and the Platform for Harmonized African Health Products Manufacturing, complementing GAVI's African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator. Despite being drivers of investment and technological advancement, African pharmaceutical companies face myriad challenges, including low investor confidence, inadequate infrastructure, trade barriers and regulatory hurdles. The $2 billion facility seeks to reverse this trend by providing comprehensive support through project preparation funding, trade finance, guarantees, venture capital, capacity building, and risk-sharing mechanisms. It is structured around three pillars: technical assistance, a pipeline of investable health projects, and regulatory support to create a conducive environment for trade and investment.
