The NHI Act of South Africa, promulgated into law on May 15, 2024 aims to provide healthcare­ coverage for all citizens. It will me­rge public and private healthcare­ funding into a single pool in the coming years. This reform happens as the­ 2024 national election nears, May 29, whe­re healthcare re­mains a key issue. On my way back from Albania 🇦🇱 , I am quite optimistic with a lot of homework. HTA and value-based healthcare on the agenda, great stakeholder engagement, many policy-shaping initiatives on the plate. HTA Ltd. , together with industry, patients, journalists, interested parties we are looking forward to presenting the potential solutions to the decision-makers, so they feel confident about managing the uncertainties and unlock the reimbursement process, improving access for the Albanian patients — looks like a promising next step after the recent investments in infrastructure and human resources. Since 2012, the Health Pooled Fund (HPF) Programme delivers improved health and wellbeing for the population of #SouthSudan, specifically a reduction in maternal deaths and deaths of children under five. To achieve this, the programme supported health facilities across eight States of South Sudan and over 4,400 Boma Health Workers delivering health services in over 746 Bomas in 55 counties (including Unity State). Since 2022, the programme works in seven States. In the period of implementation, the programme procured, stored and distributed 22 consignments of life-saving drugs worth 2 million each and set up a procurement and logistics system that consistently delivered three consignments of medicines each year, despite 80% of the road network being inaccessible during the rainy season. The HPF Consortium is led by Crown Agents, supported by Montrose, the IPA (International Procurement Agency b.v.) (IPA) and nine implementing partners. It is funded by six donors, led by Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Other donors include USAID, the European Union, Canada, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and Sida. Refining primary health care financing in Ukraine: examining provider costs and impact of war As part of the support for the ongoing health financing reforms in Ukraine, the report "Results of costing for provider payments in primary health care in Ukraine" provides a comprehensive cost analysis, offering valuable insights for recalculating and adjusting payments to PHC providers. The second report "Impact of the conflict on the costs of primary health care and investments in Ukraine" delves into survey results from providers, to assess the impact of the war on PHC providers across the country. As a concerned Nigerian like you all are , I feel it’s imperative to spotlight the urgent need to elevate our nation’s health standards. Our healthcare system demands immediate and comprehensive reforms to safeguard the well-being of our people. Firstly, promoting health education among non-health professionals is crucial. Empowering everyone with the knowledge to maintain and improve their health is a grassroots approach that can significantly foster a healthier population. Additionally, the establishment of modern laboratories is essential. These facilities will not only advance the development of new medications but also inspire and support emerging biochemists in their research endeavors. Investing in this infrastructure is a direct investment in the future health of our country. Moreover, medical practitioners, who form the backbone of our healthcare system, deserve our utmost priority. Ensuring their welfare and professional development is vital for maintaining a robust healthcare system capable of meeting today’s challenges and those of the future.
