🌍 Round Table 1: The Path to a Greener Europe through EU Initiatives 🌱 During the first round table of the European Session, moderated by Ola Wassvik, CRO and co-founder of Lightbringer, panellists Francesco Matteucci, former Program Manager in Advanced Materials for Energy and Environmental Sustainability at the EIC; Luis Guerra, Spanish National Contact Point for the EIC Accelerator; Jonathan Langton, Evolution Project Manager for European Programmes; and Enrique Serrano, CEO of cleantech company B5tec, discussed EU initiatives to support deep-tech startups, particularly in the cleantech sector. 🔑 Public vs Private Funding for Startups Public funding offers significant resources but is highly competitive and the whole process is often slower than other funding routes. Startups must ensure that they fit with the objectives of the program they are applying to and be prepared for the time commitment necessary to secure these funds. Transparency is crucial to take the decision to apply. If so, consultants or National Contact Points can help you navigate the complexities and nuances of this funding route. 💡 Funding in Europe vs. Global Competitors European startups face stiff competition from global players like China and the US, where state-backed funding and favorable regulations create significant advantages. Opportunities in Europe often come later in the startup lifecycle, leaving early-stage companies vulnerable. While China excels at scaling technologies affordably, Europe must focus on fostering innovation and protecting emerging industries to stay competitive. ⭐ Building a Stronger European Ecosystem The EIC and EU initiatives are advancing in de-risking investment and fostering cleantech innovation, yet challenges persist in Southern Europe. To retain talent and enhance innovation, Europe must address disparities in the market. EIC Fund makes a very welcome entry into Baltics. This week was rich in PE/VC/M&A events in the Baltics and I’ve had an exceptional opportunity to meet European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) in Vilnius. #EIC had their Infoday for Baltic #venturecapital funds and startups to reveal a tangible appetite for #deeptech (co)investments. Grants and equity tickets of up to 15 mEUR are available. In my welcome speech at the EIC event, I’ve stressed three things: 1. #BalticsDeepTechReport2023 has shown some exceptional science and opportunities in the Baltics. For example, the report showed that, by valuations, Baltics Deep Tech sector was one of the fastest growing in Europe. Nice to cooperate with Iron Wolf Capital, Google, Startup Lithuania, and Dealroom.co on the first Baltic report, I know that an update iteration is being prepared. 2. It’s significant to have #EICFund active in the region because EU institutions are indeed filling the market gap and are irreplaceable in VC ecosystem development. 3. Investments by public institutions is a great example of a wise state #entrepreneurialism. That makes each of us not only supporter of the European science but also beneficiary when this science becomes a profitable company. Thank you, André Moraes Sarmento and Vilma Radvilaite for the invitation and glad to meet local deeptech community, including several Baltic companies that are already under EIC radar.
