🌌 Fellowship Highlight: Malia Barker’s Cosmic Research on Tidally Decaying Exoplanets 🔭 Malia Barker, a PhD student in Computing with a focus on Data Science at Boise State University, is combining her passion for astrophysics and computational techniques to explore the mysteries of exoplanets. 🌠 "Currently, I collaborate with Dr. Brian Jackson, studying ultra-hot Jupiters—exoplanets that orbit extremely close to their host stars and gradually spiral inward toward destruction," Malia explains. "I’m developing a software package that enables astronomers to analyze exoplanet observations and calculate the likelihood of planets migrating toward their stars. This tool helps astronomers identify and prioritize the most promising candidates for further study." Her project, "Doomed Worlds—A Tool for Detecting Tidally Decaying Exoplanets," is helping astronomers focus their efforts to capture one of the rarest and most spectacular cosmic events. 🚀 Idaho Space Grant Consortium continues to be amazed by the work of our Fellows. Week 3 of the HPCD in Astrophysics collaborative graduate-level course continues to focus on Numerical Simulations. For Lecture 4 (Tue 17th Sep), ARC Laureate Fellow Prof Mark Krumholz from the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Australian National University delivered a superb lecture regarding Eulerian Methods for Numerical Hydrodynamics to a receptive and engaged cohort. Prof Krumholz showcased important computational simulations like Euler’s equations and wave analysis; Conservative finite-volume methods; Godunov's method and the Riemann problem. It was a fantastic opportunity for the cohort, composed of HDR students and ECRs to hear from one of the best leading scientists in this highly specialized area! 🌌 CENTRA Research News! 🌌 Santiago Gonzalez Gaitan, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) #postdoc at Instituto Superior Técnico, has published an impactful paper in Astronomy & Astrophysics #AandA titled "Optical and near-infrared photometry of 94 type II supernovae from the Carnegie Supernova Project". This work delivers a remarkable data set of uBgVri optical and YJH near-infrared photometry for 94 low-redshift type II supernovae (SNe II), spanning nearly 10,000 optical and 1,872 NIR data points. The study explores the physics of these hydrogen-rich massive star explosions, which are crucial in measuring distances, metallicities, and star formation rates across the Universe. The paper provides high-quality SN II light curves, identifies a new subsample of fast-declining SNe II with unique properties, and highlights intriguing outliers like SN 2009A. Very-high-energy astrophysics studies the most energetic photons in the sky, allowing the exploration of violent and extreme non-thermal phenomena in the Universe. Significant advances in knowledge have been made in this field using ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) as detectors, to study these physical processes in the Universe. This book reviews the progress in the field since the advent of the second generation IACTs around 2004.
