In today’s The Post and The Press, Kerensa Johnston calls on the government to undo the backward momentum we’re seeing in human rights in Aotearoa. The story is behind a paywall, so here are a few of the key points: 👉 More than 40 UN nations recommended that New Zealand do better in indigenous rights at last month’s United Nations Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva. 👉 Criticisms - from countries like Norway, Australia and the USA - veiled as they were in diplomatic language, were criticisms, nonetheless, and they highlight a serious erosion of human rights in Aotearoa. 👉 The Crown’s failure to resolve the Nelson Tenths is just one of many violations of human rights that we’re seeing around the country. 👉 International law mechanisms like the UPR are crucial to hold state power to account. We can only hope the government will listen to what the world is saying, and take meaningful steps to undo its current course. Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the right to seek and to enjoy asylum from persecution in other countries. This fundamental principle recognises that individuals facing serious threats, such as discrimination, violence or other forms of persecution on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, should have the opportunity to find safety and protection beyond the borders of their home country. It underlines the international community's obligation to provide refuge and assistance to those in need, and to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live in safety and dignity, free from fear and oppression. Article 14 also clarifies that this right cannot be invoked in cases of persecution for non-political crimes or for acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. This provision seeks to balance the need for protection with the responsibility to ensure that asylum is not misused to evade justice. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of international asylum procedures, ensuring that they serve those genuinely in need of protection, while safeguarding the collective security and ethical standards of the global community. ____ #IHRF #HumanRights #Asylum #KnowYourRights #Refugees

a statement issued at the UN Human Rights Council by J4YP coalition Yemen Justice4Yemen Pact Coalition, @International Service for Human Rights, and DT Institute Despite these challenges, the #Justice4Yemen Pact Coalition has made noteworthy contributions to Yemen’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process, particularly through its engagement in the UPR Joint Stakeholders Report. During the 57th session of the #Human_Rights Council, #Yemen accepted 201 out of 256 recommendations, many of which align with the Coalition’s objectives. Among these, Yemen’s acceptance of recommendations to ratify key international human rights treaties—including the Optional #Protocol to the Convention against #Torture (OPCAT) and the International Convention for the #Protection of All Persons from #Enforced_Disappearance—marks a positive step towards enhancing #transitional_justice, peace, and security efforts. #Justice4Yemen Read the full statement English edition : https://lnkd.in/d9WP5g5G Arabic edition : https://lnkd.in/dV5fRhjw watch the full review : https://lnkd.in/dyFuhFYk

Today, we observe the International Human Rights Day. Respect for and protection of fundamental rights are unconditional and essential components of border management. They are integrated into #Frontex training, operational planning and accountability mechanisms. Frontex Fundamental Rights Monitors visit operational areas on behalf of the Fundamental Rights Officer to monitor and assess the fundamental rights compliance of Frontex activities. They provide advice and assistance, contributing to the promotion of fundamental rights. As the ‘extension’ of the FRO in the field, they support the agency in upholding its fundamental rights obligations. During the Interactive Dialogue with UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defender Mary Lawlor in the #HRC55, PBI highlighted the situation of PBI accompanied human rights defenders in the following countries: 🇰🇪 In #Kenya, grassroots human rights groups report that the 2022 Community Groups Registration Act is used to pressure them to refrain from crucial human rights activities, like advocacy and violation monitoring. 🇭🇳 In #Honduras, young defenders are often on the front lines defending human rights in the country, facing cyberbullying, defamation campaigns on social media and in the media, as seen in the case of the organizations COPINH and ARCAH. 🇬🇹 In #Guatemala, over 5900 attacks against Human Rights Defenders were reported by UDEFEGUA in 2023. Furthermore, the ongoing cooptation of the justice system intensifies the criminalization of defenders, justice operators, and journalists. 🇨🇴 In #Colombia, the National Protection Unit (UNP) remains deficient, and progress on developing a public policy for Human Rights Defenders, as well as reactivating protection programs for women and collective measures, is slow. The text & video of the full intervention, as well as other interventions at the #HRC55 can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/e7dCxvGB #PBIaccompanies peace brigades international (PBI) Peace Brigades International - Colombia Project
