“Food systems leadership is something that we can actually build deliberately.” – Joost Guijt, African Food Fellowship Director. A big challenge that faces our food systems currently is inadequate investment by public and private sector actors in making our food systems meet our continent’s needs. The transformation of our food systems relies on critical elements such as evidence-building, availability of seed capital for small-scale farmers, adaptability to changes in our climate and digital eco-systems. This is only possible with deliberate and intentional investment in food systems leadership. Joost Guijt calls on intentional and scaled-up investments by financiers and duty-bearers to support initiatives aimed at building the leadership capacity of food systems leaders in Africa.

Next week, the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation will open applications for its esteemed 15-month program. But first, let's revisit graduate Ross Anderson. Ross, a fourth-generation dairy farmer, spent a decade away from his family's farm working as a builder before returning at age 30. Since his homecoming in 2006, Ross “didn’t shy away” when industry peers nudged him to apply for leadership roles and development opportunities. He served five years on the GippsDairy board, and six years (three as chair) on Herd Improvement Co-operative Australia Ltd. Ross said the program provided invaluable insight into contemporary leadership. “Leadership is a lot like dairy farming; you have responsibilities and you need to adapt and understand different situations and circumstances." “You can’t farm – or be a leader – on your own; you need to have good people around you who can also adapt to different situations. Leadership is not about a title; it’s about being collaborative and transparent, and individuals working as a team." Read more: https://lnkd.in/gDkwdWAD

Rural Leaders is pleased to announce the renewal of its partnership agreement with Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ). The signing of this new partnership aligns strongly with B+LNZ’s People and Capability Strategy focused on improving on-farm talent retention. Core to delivering on the objective of increasing the retention of people from their first day on farm to their third year is the role of on-farm leadership. Justine Kidd, General Manager Extension, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, says, “On-farm leadership is critical to solving the challenge of our people’s future on farm. We are attracting enough young talent to the sector, but we aren’t holding them. Rural Leaders’ world-class delivery of leadership programmes supports our strategy, and we are looking forward to our continued joint effort growing great rural leaders across New Zealand.” You can read more on this renewed partnership in a short article here https://lnkd.in/gqZZ4FVS Pictured: Lisa Rogers, CEO, Rural Leaders (left).
