#Elephants are keystone species, playing a critical role in maintaining the biodiversity of the ecosystems in which they live. Have you ever wondered what role they play exactly? Well, these gentle giants help shape their environment in numerous ways. By eating a variety of plants and fruits, elephants disperse seeds over large areas through their dung, promoting plant diversity and forest regeneration. Their ability to knock down trees and shrubs creates clearings that allow new plants to grow and provide habitats for other species. Additionally, during dry seasons, elephants dig water holes that not only quench their thirst but also provide water for other wildlife. Despite their importance, elephants face significant threats from poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. At the African Wildlife Foundation, we are dedicated to protecting these magnificent creatures. Indeed Elephants plays a critical role in maintaining the biodiversity like you have observed, there is need to address the increasing human wildlife conflicts that specifically target elephants! I’m currently doing a research on the impact of elephant crop raids around Queen Elizabeth National park on food security, the preliminary findings are so alarming that call for the attention of all stakeholders!
Elephants play a critical role in the up keep of their ecosystems. It’s wonderful that organizations such as AWF exist so that wildlife can have a bright future.
