AfriGEO NETWORK. The AfriGEO initiative, developed within the GEO framework, strengthens the link between the current GEO activities with existing capabilities and initiatives in Africa and provides the necessary framework for countries and organizations to access and leverage ongoing bilateral and multilateral EO-based initiatives across Africa, thereby creating synergies and minimizing duplication for the benefit of the entire continent. AfriGEO addresses the need for strengthened connections between the GEO activities and African activities, and so supports the continuously growing African EO community and the ongoing national and regional programs. In addition, the initiative supports the downscaling of GEO global initiatives, such as GEOGLAM, to regional and national levels. AmeriGEO, Group on Earth Observations (GEO), AfriGEO is hence an initiative of the African community in GEO providing a coordination framework and platform for Africa’s participation in GEO and contribution to the development of GEOSS. AfriGEO therefore is establishing a network of individual EO users all over Africa to promote access and utilization of Earth Observation for societal benefit and implementation of post 2025 GEO strategy on Earth Intelligence for All. Its Friday and I think I was told recently that Friday afternoon was the best time for Social Media Posts (or was it the opposite). Anyway, here are 3 takeaways for me from this week's #DigitalTwin Summit in Auckland: 1. The Digital Twin conversation has largely moved on from "What is it?" to "How far down the track are we all?" and "What techniques are working best?". This was supported by the level of interest on the topic of "maturity" covered in the excellent presentation from Esri's Brett Dixon. Brett and others also emphasized the need to keep the eye on the prize, namely to remain outcome focused and not be (too) distracted by shiny objects. 2. Digital Twin is a topic and term which resonates with a large enough group here in NZ to have almost 200 people at the event, about 60% of whom (my estimate) would be strongly connected with the NZ Geospatial sector. This surely reinforces the idea that Geospatial underpins Digital Twins eg through its ability to integrate using Location as a secret ingredient. While great to see so many familiar faces, I did wonder who we were missing to make a complete community although with these familiar GIS faces, even if the conversations themselves were different and reflective of the topics being covered so well by the speakers and panelists.) 3. The value of face to face events cannot be underestimated and the connections that were made or reinforced face to face were stronger than their online (Zoom / Teams) "digital twin" equivalents ;)
