At Afrimat's Jenkins Mine, the Mine's Management Team has increased efficiencies and blast block general grades through the implementation of a vibrating ripper tool. Blast blocks are planned to extract Ore and Waste. A certain percentage of Blast Blocks intersect both Ore and Waste. Hanging-wall Shale Waste in contact with Ore is a soft material that can be removed without drilling and blasting. Previously, the soft Shale on the Ore contact was removed with an excavator and bulldozer leaving a certain amount of Shale Waste on the Ore contact, causing dilution of the grade on the Ore contact. The Vibrating Ripper was implemented in 2023 to remove Hanging-wall Waste on top of the Ore contact to decrease the dilution of Fe Grade in a Blast Block. #Mining #MiningEngineering #Efficiencies

The primary goal of stemming in blasting is to optimize the containment of energy released during the blasting process, a critical but often overlooked factor in the mining and quarrying industry. Here are the general steps to follow in designing stemming: 1. Determine the appropriate length of stemming using design guidelines, scaled depth of burial calculations, and site-specific geological considerations. 2. Select the right type and size of stemming material, typically ranging from 1/8th to 1/10th of the hole diameter. 3. Enhance stemming effectiveness by choosing suitable stemming devices like Varistem stemming plugs (visit www.varistem.com) or equivalent options. These devices vary in their features and capabilities, as illustrated in the accompanying video. 4. Place significant emphasis on rigorous QAQC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) practices during the charging process to ensure precise execution of the designed stemming length. Prioritizing these steps will undoubtedly result in improved blasting outcomes by enhancing energy containment, all at a fraction of the cost compared to the repercussions of inadequate stemming. #mining #miningindustry #blasting

As deep-sea mining nears commerical production, one of the remaining major issues is shipping nodules. Most mine-sites are extremely remote, and a specialist breed of bulk carrier ("STARS") is required. STARS will need to carry out relatively unusual operations in order to transfer nodules from a PSV in deepwater that is moving and harvesting. Various options exist, including line-astern and alongside transfers; either via slurry hose or conveyor - but in all cases these are unique operations with few precedents and limited regulations.
