In June 2024, Nancy Abu-Bonsrah achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Black woman to graduate from Johns Hopkins University's neurosurgery program. Dr. Patricia Bath is the first female black doctor with a medical patent for a Laserphaceo probe that vaporizes cataracts through a 1-millimeter incision. Once the cataract is removed, the patient's lenses can be replaced. The device was a concept in 1981 and, after much research and testing, was patented in 1988. Bath holds four additional US patents in addition to the patent for Laserphaceo. Dr. Bath's ophthalmology journey began after earning her medical degree from Howard University. She was the first woman ophthalmologist professor at UCLA in 1975. Recognizing the disproportionate rates of blindness among Black Americans, she co-founded The American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, a testament to her unwavering commitment to addressing health disparities. I write a lot about the importance of Black physicians in medicine and the fact that their numbers are not substantially increasing. Earlier this year, I wrote about a different kind of problem affecting Asian American physicians. While they are well represented in medicine (in numbers higher than their presence in the American population) numbers show Asian American doctors are not represented in academic leadership in high numbers -- often despite having long records of achievement, publications, and service. Some call it the bamboo ceiling, and a number of physicians were willing to speak openly with me about the issue, painful as it is, for this story. https://lnkd.in/gm7cFzPn

Unfortunately, for some racial and ethnic minorities, instead of being relieved of their pain, they are actually forced to endure oligoanalgesia, which is ineffective treatment for pain. Research demonstrates that these racially driven implicit biases influence the insufficient pain management plans provided for these patients. Being undertreated can create a cycle of advanced disease and despair, both of which can further diminish the quality of life of patients.
