Education and climate change are inextricably linked, finds the latest GEM Report UNESCO on “Learning to Act for People and Planet.” AFS was invited to a briefing event on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum today featuring UNESCO GEM Report representatives, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and youth leaders. We support the main recommendations from the UNESCO GEM Report on how to achieve education’s potential for climate action which are aligned with the recently published AFS Framework on Active Global Citizenship: ✔ Shift the paradigm so that education can rise up to the demands posed by the climate change challenge ✔ Recognize education for its role in developing mitigation and adaptation solutions to climate change challenges ✔ Include investment in education under climate finance programs ✔ Commit to monitor efforts to greening education, starting with the curriculum.
