The TSL 2024 International Student Essay #competition: Nature-based Solutions is now open!! Please help spread the word to #students, #teachers and #schools everywhere! “How can nature help us achieve the UN SDGs in my community?” Nature provides us with everything we need to survive and thrive - clean air and water, food, materials for shelter, medicines and so much more. Many people believe that nature can help us tackle major global challenges such as #climatechange, food and water security, #BiodiversityLoss and #disaster risk reduction, as well as improving human health, societal #wellbeing and developing #sustainable economies. We want to hear students’ own views on how they feel that nature can support the achievement of the SDGs in their own communities. Students are invited to approach the topic however they wish. They can choose to focus on one SDG, or multiple #sdgs that they feel are a key issue within their #communities and explore how #nature could help to improve the situation. After the phases of incredulity and excitement upon being selected by my institute, the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam, to talk to Her Majesty, I dedicated a significant amount of time to make the most of my limited opportunity. Together with another student from ISS, Emily Edepi, and two colleagues from the Universiteit Utrecht, Ema Vrînceanu and Shreeya Patangay, we had 10 minutes to give our perspective about climate change. So, roughly two minutes and a half per student. What came to my mind: We were among global experts in climate change. PHDs, international leaders, NGO directors and rectors who knew much more than myself about the topic. So I framed it using my lenses: Education. Because then, I would offer an unique perspective, would not be repetitive and as a bonus, would feel more comfortable speaking, since I was talking from my area of expertise. I framed my perspective through the lens of education, arguing that ignoring future generations would be both unfair and unjust in the context of a Just Transition. Every transition, to be sustainable, has to include education for new generations. To tackle one of the most wicked problems of our generation, we need to cooperate and make decisions based on facts and data. Education specialists explored the critical role of early climate education for learners at the 1th Asia Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development as UNESCO has reaffirmed its leadership in catalyzing cooperation for climate education. Hence, that message underscored the side event, ‘Building a Greener Future: Education as a Climate Solution’, at the 11th Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development, which was held at the United Nations Conference Centre on 21 February 2024, in Bangkok.   The event was co-organized by the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok (UNESCO Bangkok), the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), Save the Children, Plan International, World Vision International, the United Nations Children's Fund, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat.
