Transformative growth was on full display at the fourth annual Air Force Materiel Command Continuous Improvement and Innovation Training Summit, Aug. 13-15 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Hosted by the Air Force Materiel Command Commander's Accelerated Initiatives Office (CDX), this year’s event theme was “The Power of Integration,” and brought together nearly 200 leaders, practitioners, and experts from across the United States Department of the Air Force fostering a culture where every Airman is encouraged to identify opportunities for improvement, think creatively, and develop solutions that drive the United States Air Force mission forward. Our AFWERX team held a number of sessions at the event, helping participants gain valuable tools and strategies to tackle current and future challenges to drive American Ingenuity. Interesting article on Multi Domain Operations (MDO) on the TMST LinkedIn page.
Training Multi-Domain Operations – An Introduction The Army Chief of Staff re-emphasized Multi-Domain Transformation in Chief of Staff Paper #1, stating the Army must transform today to meet coming challenges from determined near-peer challengers. That means not only a return to full-spectrum operation but also increased speed of adoption and convergence of innovative technologies to maintain future decision dominance and overmatch required to win the next fight. He set 2035 as the Army Aimpoint to be fully modernized for Large Scale Combat Operations and 2028 as the Army Waypoint to complete initial assessments, assumptions, and adjustments of direction and investments. TMST Consultants will write a series of articles discussing the Army’s MDO transformations. A timeline and thumbnail of those articles follow. On or about 7 May, Casey Welch, US Army, Retired, will discuss the Human Domain of training modernization. As the nature of combat trends toward a machine-dominated battlespace, many assume that human investment in warfighting will decrease. However, that idea runs counter to the history of technological advancement in warfare. People will remain the most decisive element of MDO. On 21 May, John Graebener, US Army, Retired, will discuss the training of formation. The US Army’s transition to Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) in 2022 also requires a shift in how leaders train their formations. In many cases, critical capabilities that enhance MDO are still under development. Leaders must account for these emerging capabilities while simultaneously preparing for conflict. On 4 June, Chris Blais, US Army, Retired, will discuss how the conflict in Ukraine provides valuable insights into MDO training. Adaptable training systems that reflect changing battlefield realities are a necessity. Interoperability and coalition operations take time and require familiarity with a separate, diverse set of requirements. Coalition participation should be considered in all Brigade and above training scenarios. On 10 June, Carl Priechenfried, USMC, Retired, will focus on Multi-Domain Operations in the Pacific. MDO will affect the Pacific theater as strongly as the other theaters, with unique aspects. Geographically, it is the largest theater and most climatically diverse theater. Training individuals, staff, and formations in MDO is both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge has a historical precedent in AirLand battle transformation. However, the impact of technology’s increased pace of change is greater. Recurring, focused, and realistic training at multiple echelons, refreshed at the pace of change, is the Army’s challenge for successful MDO operations. In October 2023, The Army Chief of Staff (CSA) directed the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to “present options to eliminate and/or significantly reduce online training requirements prior to (resident) PME”. Question? How does this affect the initiative to eventually confer graduate degrees at the SMC and allow for MLC to confer under graduate degrees? Or am I off on this future objective? Discussion. It makes since to eliminate DLC but I hope it doesn’t affect NCOs achieving degrees that are conferred through USASMA. https://lnkd.in/e8rQ7qXF Mike Weimer Michael Grinston Jason Schmidt

🎖️ The Shortest Duration Project I've Ever Managed: 1 Hour! 🚀 In the military, every operation, every maneuver, is essentially a project. As a Marine Communications Officer overseeing artillery operations, I managed projects that lasted as little as 1 hour – a testament to the agility and adaptability instilled in military veterans. Picture this: in the midst of combat, we fire artillery rounds, and immediately we have to relocate. Why? Because with each volley, the enemy gets a chance to pinpoint our position. These quick relocations were essentially projects, each lasting as short as just an hour. The challenge? Every new setup had different terrain, different distinct objectives, and unpredictable weather conditions. We would set up the command and control tent and decide which types of devices to use - sometimes only field radios, sometimes network-enabled ruggedized laptops depending upon the situation at hand. We also did this in the dead of night without flashlights! Ever tried to set up a network stack in the dark with night vision goggles? My Marines have! In combat, project management isn't about Gantt charts and timelines; it's about split-second decisions, adaptability, and achieving objectives against all odds. The Art of Rapid Adaptation: Why Military Veterans Excel as Project Managers ... Adaptability: Rapidly shifting from one location to another teaches veterans to adapt swiftly, a crucial skill in dynamic project environments. Resourcefulness: Navigating diverse terrains and objectives demands resourcefulness and creative problem-solving, skills honed in the military. Risk Management: In combat, risks are ever-present. Veterans inherently understand risk management and the importance of meticulous planning. Leadership: Leading a team under constant pressure builds strong leadership qualities – a foundation for effective project management. Mission-Driven Approach: Military veterans bring a mission-oriented mindset, ensuring project goals align with the broader organizational objectives. In the corporate world, these qualities translate into project managers who thrive in uncertainty, excel in crisis management, and consistently deliver results. It's not about the duration of the project; it's about achieving objectives efficiently and effectively, just like those hasty artillery relocations.
