The test to determine your blood group is called ABO typing Blood typing is a method to tell what type of blood you have. Blood typing is done so you can safely donate your blood or receive a blood transfusion. It is also done to see if you have a substance called Rh factor on the surface of your red blood cells. Your blood type is based on whether or not certain proteins are on your red blood cells. These proteins are called antigens. Your blood type (or blood group) depends on what types your parents passed down to you. Blood is often grouped according to the ABO blood typing system. In addition, antigens are also present on many patient's red cells...i.e. kidd, kell, Duffy, etc...and must be considered prior to transfusion of packed red cells. This is often referred to as a screen...hence the order term, Type and Screen.

Blood Bank tips: If you have a request for PRBCs and the patient shows an autoimmune condition, screening red cells antibodies negative and DAT is positive. by Gel card method: No compatible blood unit was found! The answer is to do the tube method with the following procedure: 1- Two drops of patient clotted serum in plain tube. “ red top tube serum is preferred “ 2- One drop of donor cells ( 3-5% suspension). 3- Incubation in a water bath for 15-60 min. “ in case you will use bovin no incubation needed due to bovine inhance capability” 4- Wash cells with Saline for three times. 5- Add two drops of AHG then mix gently. 6- Centrifuge for 20 seconds on 750 rcf. 7- Observing any agglutination under microscope. 8- Add your O check cell as a positive control to see if your negative result is valid. The procedure source is AHG GRIFOLS insert sheet. Bovine is an inhancer for reactions in tube method. Hopefully this will help you out in case you have an autoimmune patient.
