Any health system that suffers from a lack of medical oxygen is not a strong one. Less than half of hospitals in low- and middle-income countries have a consistent supply of medical oxygen or lack it entirely, forcing health workers to make difficult, life-or-death decisions every day. In collaboration with our partners Unitaid, FHI 360, USAID, The ELMA Philanthropies, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CHAI is supporting low- and middle-income countries in establishing sustainable oxygen infrastructure, implementing national oxygen policies, and improving the capacity of the health workforce to deliver a sustainable oxygen supply. By providing facilities with training and diagnostic tools, CHAI programs are improving health workers’ capacity to rapidly diagnose a range of respiratory conditions and provide appropriate treatment. #WorldHealthWorkerWeek2024 #InvestInOxygen #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers EpiC Project

I strongly believe that Public Health is not just a concept; it’s the very essence of how we live, thrive, and care for one another. It touches every one of us, from the air we breathe to the healthcare services we access. But achieving universal health coverage—ensuring that everyone, everywhere, has the healthcare they need—requires something more. It requires each of us to recognize that 'we' are public health. 'I am public health' when I advocate for better healthcare access. 'You are public health' when you support a neighbor in need. World Health Day is observed annually on April 7 to raise awareness about critical health issues facing the world and to mobilize efforts to address them. This year, THPS is proud to join the Government of Tanzania and other health stakeholders around the world in commemorating #WorldHealthDay2024, under the theme: #MyHealthMyRight. The theme ‘My Health, My Right’ was chosen to promote the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services. This is a noble cause that THPS stands for and is committed to promoting. We believe that celebrating this day directly supports the achievement of the #UNSDGoal3: Good Health and Well-being. Access to quality health services is a fundamental human right that should be available to all, regardless of their social or economic status. Unfortunately, many people around the world still face barriers to accessing essential health services, such as a lack of infrastructure, healthcare workers, and supplies. This leads to preventable deaths and suffering, particularly in low-income countries. As a public health organization, THPS is dedicated to improving access to quality health services for all. We work closely with the government, local communities, and other partners to strengthen health systems and the capacity of healthcare workers, as well as provide essential services to those in need. Through our programs, we aim to reduce inequalities in healthcare and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life. On this World Health Day, let us come together to raise awareness about the importance of health as a human right. Let us mobilize efforts to address the critical health issues facing our world and work towards achieving universal health coverage for all. Together, we can make a difference and build a healthier, more equitable world for future generations. Partners In Health Liberia’s Executive Director appointed as Commissioner for The Lancet Global Health Commission   Partners In Health Liberia is pleased to announce that its Executive Director, Dr. Maxo Luma, has been appointed Commissioner for The Lancet Global Health Commission on People-Centered Care for Universal Health Coverage, convened by the Harvard Center for Primary Care.   Dr. Maxo strongly believes that healthcare must be tailored to the needs of the individuals it serves. His appointment aligns him with a cohort of over 30 global experts who possess diverse perspectives and share a common dedication to reshaping healthcare systems.   Dr. Maxo has humbly acknowledged the significance of this opportunity while also expressing enthusiasm. He emphasized that although the journey toward achieving universal health coverage may be extensive, prioritizing people-centered care is the route that will propel the world closer to realizing this goal.   He eagerly anticipates sharing his expertise and learning from other professionals as they work to advance healthcare, advocating for fairness, accessibility, and a genuine focus on the individuals in care. Dr. Maxo is an expert in tuberculosis and drug-resistant tuberculosis, as well as a social justice and patient advocate.   The PIH Liberia’s Executive Director and his colleagues will collaborate to complete the Commission's tasks over approximately 2.5 years, starting in the second half of 2024. Their responsibilities will include formulating research questions, synthesizing existing evidence, and designing and conducting new research to promote people-centered care.   The group will use the evidence gathered to create policy and practice recommendations for implementing people-centered care in various settings. Working groups will be formed to achieve agreed-upon objectives, and they will use participatory, community-engaged research methods that align with the principles of people-centered care.   The Commission aims to address gaps in evidence-based guidance, identify best practices, and develop novel approaches to enabling people-centered care. Did you know that nearly 30% of people in the Dominican Republic lack access to essential healthcare services? This is a critical issue, especially in rural areas where medical facilities are scarce. The World Bank recently approved a $190 million project to tackle this crisis, aiming to enhance healthcare quality for vulnerable communities. Organizations like Partners for Rural Health in the Dominican Republic (PRHDR) were pivotal to achieve this by providing care and education to over 2,000 patients in 15 mountain villages.
