Christina M., 2024 Cohort NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Urban and Community Forestry Partnership Coordinator Why I Chose to Join the Green Communities Leadership Institute? I initially considered applying for the 2023 GCLI cohort, but life intervened, and I had to postpone. When the 2024 applications opened, Paul, a GCLI instructor, encouraged me to apply, and I made a promise to myself to take the leap. My interest in GCLI stemmed from a desire to invest in my personal growth and to develop new skills in informal leadership, especially in navigating leadership amidst burnout. In my role, leading volunteers has been challenging. As volunteers step away, finding successors willing to take on leadership roles has been increasingly difficult, often due to limited time and resources. Aware of the burnout risks, I hesitated to ask others to step into stressful positions. I sought to enhance my leadership abilities to better nurture leadership among my team. What I found at GCLI exceeded my expectations. I expected lectures and readings, but instead, I found myself engaged in rich discussions and sharing experiences with peers facing similar challenges. GCLI helped me recognize that the skills I already possessed could be honed into effective leadership tools. It emphasized the importance of self-care and investing in oneself—a revelation that has profoundly impacted my approach. Most importantly, GCLI connected me with a network of empathetic, brilliant professionals across the country—individuals who are not only willing to help but are also sources of inspiration. It rekindled my passion for learning and provided me with invaluable connections that continue to enrich my career. GCLI has left a lasting impression on me, reminding me of the joy of learning and the power of a supportive community. It's an experience I'm grateful to have had and one that continues to shape my leadership journey.

The Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL) program identifies, prepares, and connects aspiring leaders to spark action that will positively impact Kansas agriculture and rural communities. Ray Purdy (Blackwell, OK) reflects on KARL being created to bring individuals together from around the state of Kansas to expose them to as many different agricultural aspects found in Kansas through this two-year transformative Kansas leadership program. According to Purdy, the success of the program following the completion of the first class was obvious. "We knew immediately...we've hit some of the best things that we were wanting to do with the program," Purdy states. Purdy points out that the KARL program has continually evolved over the years to expose participants to relevant issues impacting Kansas. “Whether it's agriculture, rural development, anything that deals with everybody in Kansas, the future of the program can continually change to meet the future of Kansas," says Purdy. To learn more about the KARL Program, listen to Purdy's full story here. KARL empowers leaders to help ensure a bright future for Kansas. Next week, the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation will open applications for its esteemed 15-month program. But first, let's revisit graduate Ross Anderson. Ross, a fourth-generation dairy farmer, spent a decade away from his family's farm working as a builder before returning at age 30. Since his homecoming in 2006, Ross “didn’t shy away” when industry peers nudged him to apply for leadership roles and development opportunities. He served five years on the GippsDairy board, and six years (three as chair) on Herd Improvement Co-operative Australia Ltd. Ross said the program provided invaluable insight into contemporary leadership. “Leadership is a lot like dairy farming; you have responsibilities and you need to adapt and understand different situations and circumstances." “You can’t farm – or be a leader – on your own; you need to have good people around you who can also adapt to different situations. Leadership is not about a title; it’s about being collaborative and transparent, and individuals working as a team." Read more: https://lnkd.in/gDkwdWAD
