Today, the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), supported by Nationwide Foundation, have launched their Campaign for Healthy Homes. The campaign aims to transform the way that the built environment is regulated to ensure that all new homes promote the health and wellbeing of their residents. One in ten people in the UK (over 6 million) are living in poor quality housing but healthy homes radically reduce costs not only to people, but also to the NHS and to wider society. Our home should provide a safe haven and space for rest and recreation, as well as for work and study. The Campaign for Healthy Homes is calling for all new homes, including converted ‘permitted development’ homes, to meet a set of mandatory 12 Healthy Homes Principles. How you can help support the Healthy Homes Pledge: · Sign up to the Healthy Homes Pledge as an individual or an organisation. · As a signatory, display the Healthy Homes Pledge logo on your website or email signature. · Help spread awareness of the Healthy Homes Pledge via your networks, using the below communications assets. As I leave Winnipeg for Washington DC, I saw that the AQI today is 1. My area near the City of Trees is at 20 AQI. In many cities around the world … in places where I work … the DAILY AQI can be 300 to even 999 (and that’s just because that’s as high as the meters will reach). In neighborhoods (guess the demographic and income levels within) with low to zero tree canopy, the pulmonological distress incidences and mortality rates are higher. And what’s worse is that in some places the best trees to remove air pollutants like PM 2.5 are either removed in favor of prettier trees or are not being planted. We have used #itreetools to help some of these cities look at this particular benefit and advocate for planting the right tree in these spaces. Someone then asked whether we are afraid of “green-trification”. The answer is… let’s address that later. Right now human health and survival are more pressing. I’m talking with the Pulmonological centers at Rutgers Medical to look into how we can work together. Doctors need to be the key voice in communities and in advocacy. And it’s more than just prescribing patients nature bathing or exposure. So partner with doctors and even private businesses for advocacy. Health and money can often be voices that are more listened to than ecologists or activists or folks like me. Now…I’ll get off my soapbox. #urbanforests #airpollution #equity #humanhealth

We’ve signed up to Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA)’s #HealthyHomesPledge. We believe that every citizen has the right to a healthy, affordable and secure home in a healthy environment – the quality of our homes and neighbourhoods defines the entire arc of our lives. 🏡 One in ten people in the UK (>6 million) are living in poor quality housing. 🏡 3.7 million homes (15%) in England failed to meet the decent homes standard (minimum standards for social homes) in 2022. 🏡 Healthy homes reduce costs to people, to the NHS and wider society. The Queensland Government is investing over $1.4 million to promote healthier lifestyles in discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the state! 💰💪🏾 19 councils will receive planning funding to boost physical activity and the capacity for healthy eating habits right where it matters most: at the grassroots level. Why is this so crucial? 🤔 Because ensuring Queenslanders have access to exercise and nutritious food is key to combating health issues like diabetes, which is 3 times more common in First Nations adults, and even higher in remote locations! So, from playgrounds and sporting facilities to community kitchens and food storage and preparation areas, we're investing in planning for Queensland’s future. Together, we're bridging gaps and building healthier, happier communities, because regardless of where you live, your health and wellbeing matter. ♥ Find out more about the investment here: https://lnkd.in/gRWfJhWT #QldSportAndRec #DiscreteCommunitiesPlanningFunding
