A Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) in Georgia treats wastewater to achieve both low phosphorus limits (0.3 mg/L monthly average and 0.45 mg/L weekly average) and low ammonia-N limits (1.0 mg/L monthly average and 1.5 mg/L weekly average). Most coagulants used for removing phosphorus from wastewater require caustic to restore alkalinity for nitrification (ammonia removal). For many years, the membrane treatment industry has relied on single-component chemicals like citric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and caustic for MF/UF hollow-fiber systems. While these cleaners can be seen as a cost-effective solution, they often lead to hidden costs such as: Slower and less effective cleaning performance that leads to repeated chemical use to recover performance to baseline levels, increases in membrane replacement, and greater system downtime. They fail to recover the desired transmembrane pressures (TMPs), which can lead to an increase in cleaning frequency. The membrane foulant becomes less and less responsive to single-component chemical cleans, causing membrane performance to decline rapidly after only a few years; this often leads to premature membrane replacement.
