June 19th marks the annual observance of Juneteenth, commemorating the day, in 1865, that 2,000 Union Troops reached Galveston Bay, Texas carrying the news of the 1863 abolition of slavery and the emancipation of enslaved people across Texas and the former Confederate states. Following the end of the Civil War, the Juneteenth proclamation legally ended one shameful chapter of U.S. history. Today, Juneteenth has evolved into a "Second Independence Day:" a celebration of African American history and heritage. The struggle for civil and equal rights continues, and for GAP, that is evidenced in healthcare equity, including eliminating barriers to health and wellness. GAP is committed to improving the lives of all people, and providing intentionally inclusive brain health education and information about participating in clinical trials is one way we are doing that. We are also building and nurturing relationships with community-based organizations to improve research and treatment opportunities for people traditionally left out. GAP Offices are closed today in recognition of this important historical event, and with reflection on how we can continue to improve the lives of all people, all at once, together. #Juneteenth #HealthcareEquity

Everyone gets old, but not everyone becomes an elder. Family enterprise leaders want to build a foundation that will last for many generations. But many forget that this can’t happen unless they rethink their role as elders. If the younger generation is stepping up to new responsibilities, the elder generation must correspondingly step back. Family Business Magazine contributor and veteran family business consultant Dennis Jaffe explains how to do that. https://lnkd.in/eUcSMQzU #familybusiness #successionplanning

Family Advisor, Speaker, Author, and Facilitator of Unique, Transformative Experiences for Executives, Rising Gen Leaders, Couples, and Multi-Generational Families. Specializing in Step and Blended family dynamics.
Dennis Jaffe has done it again with an insightful article that highlights painful truths about the succession planning process for successful leaders of family enterprises. A few highlights: "You must stop assuming that history has taught you everything you need to know and begin to see that your successors inhabit a different world, much of which is foreign to you. After years of success, you need to prepare for the unknown. Your companions on this journey are the children you raised and educated. After years of being learners, they now become your teachers..." "...the leader's role should shift from being the sole authority to being an alert learner, engaging with the new generation to consider what is next for the business and the family. The senior generation must adopt a mindset of inviting their successor to share their vision and what they have learned along the way and engaging them in considering the future path of the family..." And he provides 6 actionable steps to help a business leader shift from a closed mindset to openness to a different future. #NextGenleadership #familybusiness #successionplanning #eldermentor #RisingGenleadership

If you haven't already read Jonathan Haidt's book "The Anxious Generation", start by listening to this great conversation he had last week with the first lady of Virginia regarding positive changes happening in our schools across the Commonwealth. Haidt's book examines how today's youth are increasingly affected by anxiety and mental health challenges, largely attributed to the pervasive influence of technology and social media. Research shows that constant connectivity can lead to feelings of inadequacy and social isolation. These themes are discussed in his accompanying talk, focusing on how digital platforms shape children’s interactions and self-perception, highlighting the risks of exposure to cyberbullying, misinformation, and diminished face-to-face interactions. Dr. Haidt advocates for a balanced approach, encouraging parents and educators to engage in open dialogues with children about their online experiences, promote digital literacy, and encourage healthy online habits. Together, these insights showcase the need for a supportive environment to help young people navigate the complexities of modern technology and mental health. As a mental health clinician who works primarily with adolescents and young adults, I'm looking forward to watching how Virginia's new policies regarding phone bans during the entire school day will positively impact youth and families. https://lnkd.in/e6T3jHNK
