A look at the expression " mind your Ps and Qs" Mind your Ps and Qs is an English language expression meaning "mind your manners", "mind your language", "be on your best behaviour". Why Ps and Qs? The origin of this expression has many theories. One suggests that "Ps and Qs" is short for "pleases" and "thank-Qs". Another theory is that it originates from the English pubs and taverns of the 17th century. Bartenders would keep watch over the pints and quarts - measurements of liquid( 2 pints in a quart). This was to ensure that they knew how much the costumers had consumed. Mind your Ps (pints) and Qs ( quarts)!! Yet another theory suggests that it was a reminder to distinguish between the lower case letter "p" and its mirror image "q" when writing. Whatever be its origin, this expression is a good reminder about the importance of polite and respectful behaviour. In a world where online interaction often provides a cloak of anonymity, politeness sometimes takes the backseat and people forget to mind their Ps and Qs . Though I haven't yet figured out how AI could effectively help our editing students cheat (link at end), I do find this concept of loading assignment descriptions with whited-out keywords as telltales interesting. What are your thoughts on GPTs in OUR students' toolkits? So I tried it! It's answer is rather thoughtful and not entirely wrong: ME: Explain copyediting using the words "trojan" and "frankenstein" "ChatGPT: Certainly! Copyediting is like being a linguistic Trojan, infiltrating written content to ensure its integrity and coherence. It involves delicately avoiding Frankenstein-like inconsistencies, stitching together a seamless narrative for the reader's clarity and enjoyment." https://lnkd.in/gkjEDtSD https://lnkd.in/gcqEv7xA
English Language Arts Teacher on Instagram: "Here’s some advice for using this teacher hack👇 - If your trojan horse includes specific words, make sure that they are written within quotation marks. - Your trojan horse needs to be completely unrelated to your essay prompt and subject matter. - Always include the requirement of references in your essay prompt, because ChatGPT doesn’t generate accura

Does anyone have any tips/guidelines for memorising words and phrases in a foreign language? For example, someone who wants to memorise phrases in Chinese should take what action, what learning methodology: mnemonic associations such as Zizzle, periodic revision using Anki and Mango Languages, listening to audio lessons such as Pimsleur and Rocket Languages, and what to do if they still can't memorise the phrases and words to be able to recall them when practising without consulting?

Our latest blog includes advice on how to remember new vocabulary words. "9 Tips for ESL Vocabulary Acquisition and Retention" We all know you can’t speak a language without knowing the right words – words are literally the building blocks of language. That’s why learning and retaining new vocabulary is such a fundamental part of learning to speak fluently. But retention is, for most people, the most difficult, time-consuming, and at times discouraging part of second language acquisition. There are just so many words to be learned and remembered. It can seem hopeless, like climbing a mountain that is so tall you know you will never reach the summit. But the process starts easily. You read or hear a word, your practise saying it, maybe write it down, and recall it a few minutes later. That’s your short-term memory at work. But if you want these words to stick, you need to commit them to long-term memory. And what’s the best way to do that? Well, let’s see what science – and teachers – have to say. https://lnkd.in/eNw2ePqb #english #englishvocabulary #businessenglish

Qwen2 works great for generating stories in Mandarin. The grammar is a lot better than Llama3:8b and GPT-4o and I've not encountered any unexpected English text in the stories unlike the other models I've experimented with so far. Since Qwen2 supposedly supports Malay language, I tried using it to generate stories in Malay as well. Results were not ideal as unexpected English words were included in the output. Nonetheless, this seems to be a promising update and I'm looking forward to the next iteration! Here's more information on Qwen2 for anyone who's interested in LLMs. https://lnkd.in/g6x9fs5W
