9 years ago, I was working remotely on what was at the time a cutting edge laptop 💻, looking at it now it seems a little dated and vintage. How has the technology and equipment you worked on 10 years ago evolved in software, speed and functionality? What new tasks and functions can now be done with a phone 📱 and laptop 💻 that were not doable 5-10-30-200-1000 years ago. The way we work has and is evolving, AI 🤖 will continue to accelerate the processes, enhance it in some exciting ways and disrupt/replace tasks currently being done by humans. It has been a journey of innovation, invention, curiosity, creativity and evolution that we’ve been on for along time, perhaps all of human history. I still remember the 8 track, the beeper , the VCR, the cassette player and the first cell phones ☺️ and this only a bleep in my lifetime. It has been said that: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” This makes sense to me, change seems to be a constant variable through the lens’s of history. I do think it takes intelligence, resilience, determination, intuitiveness and strength to be flexible and malleable. Change, evolution requires reading and being aware of the changes taking place in our environment/landscape, taking timely and aligned actions towards embracing it or moving away from it. We are in a time of palpable change for individuals, businesses, organizations and societies. We are always in a state of learning and reinvention while finding sustainability and creating a new future. The speed and levels of invention and innovation is what seems and feels different. Nothing is still, things are always rusting, ripening, aging, decaying and flourishing, this is visible and evident throughout nature. We can add human migration to this equation as well ☺️. The environment is always speaking to us, it is part of what we in the risk management and insurance industry are always paying attention to.

Amid a once-in-a-century global pandemic and an uptick in natural disasters, insurers have kept doing what they do best: predict and protect against volatility. And all the while, they’ve integrated new technologies to deliver more efficient claims processing, improved customers’ digital experience, and supported increasingly hybrid and far-flung workforces. The future of the industry will see accelerating change on multiple fronts, from digital capabilities to customer expectations. To thrive in increasingly complex operating environments, insurers must become digital leaders. For starters, that involves casting aside legacy, on-premise systems to embrace cloud-based technologies that support a range of competitive advantages, including data-driven decision engines, tailored customer experiences, and a tech-savvy workforce. And while each insurer’s path forward is unique relative to its position in the market and strategy, insurance leaders are in agreement about one thing: an inflection point has been reached when it comes to the value of insurers’ adopting new tech to drive change.

There is no such thing as a perfect solution. Hence, continuous improvement. But that does not mean you don't use that solution and fix it as you go. When boilers and steam power were introduced onto ships, there was justified fear of failure (that's why the ships still had sails) and death. Several ships exploded because the technology was not understood and safety had not been figured out. Now imagine if, at the first big disaster, we said, nope, not using boilers anymore. Going back to sailing, forget electricity, forget about trains, and safely traveling the continent. Where would we be today? How many more would have died without that innovation and the future innovations it brought? AI is really in the same situation. Yes, it has problems. Yes, it needs human support and oversight. But the benefits far outweigh the risks. I am not exaggerating when I say it could save millions of lives, hours, and dollars in Healthcare expenses. The risk is worth it; it must be embraced, and those who don't embrace it will be left behind.
