𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞? [Weekly Halachah #28] Rav Moshe Feinstein [1] rules that one need not wait six hours after swallowing a vitamin or pill with meat ingredients. He reasons that neither Rambam or Rashi’s rationales for waiting apply here, since there is no lingering meat fat or pieces of meat that remain in one’s mouth. Further grounds for leniency in the case of medicine is that elsewhere, Mechaber and Shach [2] rule that one may consume non-kosher ingredients in a medicine, if one is not consuming them in the normal way that people derive pleasure from the ingredients. As a general rule, swallowing a pill is not the normal way of consuming the ingredients. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach ruled this way as well, and permitted non-kosher medicines l’halachah. [3][4] ___________________________ [1] Igros Moshe YD 2:26 [2] YD 155:2-3, and Shach 14. Mechaber there writes “with respect to other issurim, one may be healed by them if one is dangerously ill, even in the normal way that one ordinarily derives pleasure from them. And if one is not dangerously ill, then one may not derive pleasure from them in the ordinary way, but in a non-ordinary way they may, with the exception of forbidden grafted mixtures, and meat and milk, which are forbidden to be consumed even in an abnormal way, unless one is dangerously ill. The case here of swallowing a pill with fleishig or milchig ingredients is more lenient, since the requirement to wait between meat and milk is only a rabbinic harchakah. [3] Minchas Shlomo 17:2 [4] Leniencies for consuming non-kosher medicines also depend on the principle of nosen ta’am l’fgam, ruined taste. This principle is discussed at length in YD siman 103.

The last article in my PhD project is now published and available: https://lnkd.in/dAD4tAAA 🥳 The study investigated the interaction between dietary zinc content and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli F18 challenge to newly weaned pigs the first two weeks after weaning 🐷 General findings; - E. coli challenge caused a reduced gain for pigs fed 150 ppm dietary zinc. - 150 ppm dietary zinc worsens the diarrhoea and increased the shedding of E. coli in E. coli challenged pigs. - The E. coli challenge reduced the serum zinc concentration for pigs fed 2,500 ppm dietary zinc. #PhD #weanedpigs #zinc #EscherichiacoliF18 #diarrhoea
