HOT, HOT, HOT: PREFERENCES FOR U.S. SPENDING TO ADDRESS EXTREME WEATHER — by Jonathan Coppess, Maria Kalaitzandonakes and Brenna Ellison Summer 2024 was the hottest on record and brought several extreme weather events across the country. Using results from the Gardner Food and Agricultural Policy Survey, we find that respondents were similarly affected by extreme weather events this summer as they were last summer, with slightly less reporting a need for medical care this summer. Second, across five waves of data, we continue to see strong support for increasing U.S. spending efforts to address climate change and extreme weather. Urban heat islands are pockets of cities that are a lot warmer than the average local temperature. Heat islands increase energy costs for their residents and decrease public health. Climate risk and resilience plans will often grapple with urban heat islands to improve the quality of life of urban residents. Since paved surfaces are strongly related to urban heat islands, I thought it would be interesting to visualize the land use (forested and paved) next to the measured temperatures to see how close the relationship is.

🌡️ As we continue to witness unprecedented heat waves across the United States, it's essential to remember that extreme weather conditions are not just uncomfortable but can be deadly. ☀️ The highest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. was a staggering 134.4°F in Death Valley, California, while the coldest plunged to -80°F in Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska. These extremes remind us of our planet's incredible diversity and resilience.
