In several posts, we’ve talked about the importance of language and the challenges brands can face when the language of the product is not understood. 🤔 Hard Seltzers, and their limited success in the UK are a perfect example of this. 🍸 Within the RTD category people have endless choices. Cocktails. Mocktails. Gin in a tin…  🥝 Flavours ranging from mango and passionfruit to damson and ginger. They’re fun, light hearted, often sweet. ✔ They’re easy to understand.  A flavour (often fruit) plus a spirit. ❓ But what’s a hard seltzer? 🤷♀️ For the UK market the name has no meaning. No context. What’s a seltzer? And a hard one at that? It doesn’t sound fun or exciting like a passion fruit martini. Trying to educate people with a new name is challenging.  ⌛ Especially in a crowded market, where time and consideration are limited. can/will r(h)um be the "next" category? i doubt it it's too diverse, from the super high ester/funky (Hampden anyone?) to the syrupy-sweet spiced industrial garbage and everything in between, hence not straightforward to understand and therefore reducing tremendously it's potential to become the next new thing. the "next new thing" needs to be obvious and intuitively easy to get. consumers often have an idea of what tequila, bourbon or say cognac "taste like". of course, there are amazing products and a lot of vile ones within each of these categories but the flavor & aroma spectrums within one of these types of distillates is nowhere as wide as it is with r(h)um. now that does not mean that some excellent and artisanal r(h)um BRANDS cant become super successful at capturing the attention of a meaningful fraction of spirits drinkers gravitating around other categories. some producers do check all the boxes and if they were to play their cards well, they could potentially make it big.
